š About Us ā A Story That Began in 1870s Michigan
The history of Briar Barns is as unique as the couples and families we host. It began when Joseph and Diana English arrived from London with dreams of a new life in Michiganās wilderness. Their son Richard, born in 1843, designed and built the distinctive farmhouse in 1879 after marrying Caroline E. French of Rockford.
The English family not only established a thriving logging company but also played a vital role in founding Sparta. Over time, our barns transitioned into agricultural use, most notably as part of the Stout Dairy Farmāwhere cattle once roamed and the daily rhythm of farm life shaped the community.
In 2015, the Denham family discovered the then-vacant property and envisioned a future where these historic buildings could once again host gatherings. Nine months of careful restoration followed, preserving original details while adding modern comforts. By 2017, Briar Barns officially opened, blending authentic heritage with refined elegance for todayās celebrations.
