Just got my new gasket from WWL. The edge on one side is a right
angle; the other edge is rounded. Anyone know which one goes up - i.e.
goes in contact with the channel in the grouphead, and which side goes
down, i.e. goes in contact with the portafilter?

No real answer, but I've always heard smooth side against the group
and rough side against the portafilter.

One side has raised letters on it. The side with the raised letters goes down toward the drip tray. The smooth side goes up into the channel. Soak the gasket in hot water first and make sure the channel is absolutely clean of debris.

The rounded edge (assuming you are talking about the inside edge) goes toward the top. This seats with the slight angle that the flat part of the flange makes as it becomes the vertical column of the screen.

The curved edge of the gasket goes to the top. It should hug the
curved top edge of the dispersion screen.

Hello, I install the group head gasket with the rounded edge upwards because
the shower screen has a rounded lip to match against. - Dennis

I found the raised letters, pointed them down, and the gasket went in,
and seems to work, perfectly.

Thanks,

Karl

IMO raised letters always go up facing the top. The main sealing function on the gasket is to prevent water from leaking between the portafilter basket and the screen where the hot water exits the group. If this wasn't the case there would be no need to "lock" the PF into the group. This sealing area should have the best contact between gasket and metal - smooth surfaces will work best - i.e. no raised letters.

Doesn't work that way on an espresso machine. Don't know why but it doesn't.Check your factory installed gasket out.

Well it works that way on mine... the bevel and the letters are on the top side, where they belong...

My factory installed gasket does not have any lettering on it. The OEM replacement gasket I obtained from WLL does have raised lettering. That is the one that is not thick enough (the email I just sent).

Have you guys considered that perhaps it doesn't make any difference
which way the gasket goes in :-)

Lots of details don't matter to lots of folks in many areas... more e61 gasket info here (for the detail oriented) : http://espressoparts2.zoovy.com/category/espressotutorials.e61groupmaintenance/

The original question was a simple one - with IMO, a simple answer... (unlike lots of other espresso arguments)
