Dear Friend,
Thank you for taking the time to review my December e-mail newsletter. We have some interesting topics including an update on efforts to close the space gap, my House floor statement on the health care reform bill that narrowly passed the House and ways you can give to others over this Holiday season. Please remember that there are many more of our neighbors in need this year than last and look for a local charity to support to help their needs.
Please take some time to visit my website and my YouTube page or contact my office with your thoughts or concerns on the issues that affect you and your family. I have posted a new 2010 survey on my website and would love to recieve your input on the issues likely to be considered beginning in January. It's my deepest honor to serve you in Congress and, as always, my staff and I are ready to assist you! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Sincerely,

Bill Posey
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE _______________________
Congress Should Give Back Their Raise; Provide Relief to Seniors and Veterans
First, I want to say that I think Members of Congress should give back the 2009 pay increase which was approved in 2008. Congress, in my view, is simply not deserving of a pay raise. Providing itself with a pay raise for 2009 demonstrates a disconnect from the American people and is just one more reason so many Americans are losing confidence in our federal government. I gave back the 2009 raise that was passed before I got here and cosponsored H.R. 156, the Stop the Congressional Pay Raise Act which blocks a pay increase for 2010.
This year's formula for Social Security resulted in no cost of living adjustment. To help compensate for this, I cosponsored H.R. 3691, the Seniors and Veterans Economic Stimulus Act of 2009. It uses unspent stimulus funds to extend the $250 payment to Social Security recipients and veterans into 2010. I also voted for passage of H.R. 3631 which will freeze Medicare Part B premiums at 2009 levels ensuring there is no reduction in Social Security payments.
HEALTH CARE REFORM UPDATE _____________
Rep. Posey Shares His Views on the Majority's Health Care Reform Legislation
Congress is engaged in a fundamental debate about health care reform and the extent of government intervention into individual health care decisions. I want to take the opportunity to share with you my thoughts on health care reform, why I voted against the 2,000 page health care bill that narrowly passed the House; what I think needs to happen in order to bring medical costs down, expand access and maintain medical freedom and privacy. Please take a few minutes to read my statement which was submitted to the Congressional Record:
“I rise to express my deep concerns not only about the specific provisions in the bill before us, but over the lack of transparency and openness throughout this process.
“In just a few short hours, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on the most sweeping changes ever in our nation’s health care system. The final version of this bill, including last minute amendments, was made available to Members of Congress just a few short hours ago. The final text of this bill has not been made available to the public or Members of Congress for at least 72 hours.

Join Us for "Santa for Seniors"
Many local Senior Citizens are experiencing tough circumstances this year. My staff and I hear from many struggling just to make ends meet week to week, and the Holidays can be particularly difficult. That is why, like so many others, we are taking the opportunity to embrace the Spirit of the Season and seek out ways to bring a little joy to those in need.
On December 18th my Florida staff will be visiting with residents of the Brookshire, an assisted living facility in Melbourne, and bringing them some holiday cheer. We are excited to play Santa for these local seniors and looking forward to a fun day of fellowship.

SPACE UPDATE ___________________________
Posey Writes to President, Appropriations Committee to Make the Case for Extending the Space Shuttle, Closing the Space Gap
I recently wrote a letter to the President asking him to revise his budget plan and allocate sufficient funding to NASA's human space flight missions in order to keep his commitment to close the gap and keep America first in space.

Also, in a letter to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee, I asked the Committee to insert language into the the final FY 2010 Commerce, Justice,Science Appropriations bill to ensure that NASA takes no actions that would preclude the possibility of flying the Shuttle beyond the current flight manifest.
