I liked the word study/quiz. It made me take a deeper look at the
meaning of such a deep word. I am still a little confused as to how
it is used in 1 Peter 1:2. The way the sentence is laid out, it seems
that the "sanctifying work of the Spirit" was the way in which God
chose his people. I am not an English major, but that is how I read
it. To me though, it seems to make more sense to say that that
snctifying is what the Spirit does TO the chosen people Peter is
writing to. that is how it is used in the other references. I may be
way off or this may not make sense to anyone else- it is hard to
explain in writing. Any thoughts?

I, too, liked the word study and quiz. This is all making my study so
much more intentional (and frequent!!).
My dictionary defines sanctify as "to make holy or ready for service
to God". Using this context, I agree with Katie that sanctifying
seems to be the action that the Spirit does to the chosen people.
Looking forward to hearing other ideas....

I agree with you Katie and Emily. I thought the sanctifying work of
the Spirit was something the Spirit does. But, I'm still confused as
to how that happens. The Spirit sanctifies us how?

When looking in a concordance it gave 3 different definitions: (1) to
set apart (2) to cleanse and purify sinners (3) to honor and
magnify.
I agree with all of you that the Spirit is sanctifying the chosen in I
Peter 1:2. So I'm thinking that based on the definition (2) to
cleanse and purify sinners, maybe the Spirit cleanses us when we ask
for forgiveness of sins. Guess I need to do some research :)

I know I am adding on to this discussion a bit late, but a concordence
I was reading said this about 1 Peter 1:2.

"The order of the terms suggests that the sanctifying work of the
Spirit referred to here is the influence of the Spirit that draws one
from sin towards holiness...i.e. the Spirit's sanctifying leads to
obedient saving faith and cleansing from sin."

Maybe the Spirit sanctify's us by motivating us towards an obedient
faith? I'm not sure how he does it. I sometimes think maybe it is in
a similar way to our conscience.

For me, your idea, Megan, that the Spirit's sanctification moves us
towards obedience
is a helpful way to look at His work as described in :2.
That's maybe what the author is saying when he says the Spirit's
work is FOR obedience...as if our obedience is the goal of the Spirit
here
so that 'as obedient children" (:14) we are equipped to choose to 'be
holy' (:16)
Certainly not the only goal of the Spirit but one.
