The term "glory to be revealed" & similar references (1:7, 11;
4:11-13; 5:2) caught my attention. I have always loved to read of the
descriptions in the O.T. of God's glory revealed - on Sinai, at the
completion of the tabernacle & the temple, etc. The thought of being
"face-to-face" & seeing unveiled glory is an awesome prospect!
As I ran some cross references, I realized that Peter also refers to
"salvation to be revealed" (1:5) & similar statements: "grace to be
revealed" (1:13); "will receive a crown of glory" (5:4). The
following is taken from Harper Collins' definition of the O.T. use of
the word "salvation:" God's people face an adversary ... He rescues &
delivers. The goal of such deliverance is THE ESTABLISHMENT OF GOD'S
REIGN AMONG HIS PEOPLE.
In our finite, suffering state, I think we mostly long for salvation
to be revealed because it will provide an escape from life's trials
and temptations ... for us & those we love. Perhaps as we mature in
our faith, our longing to see His glory revealed (the answer to our
"Thy kingdom come" prayers) will become an "equal" longing. Or
perhaps that will only come when we "see Him just as He is" & be made
like Him (I Jn 3:2). What a glorious day that will be! In the
meantime, "Peace to all of you who are in Christ."
