I've been thinking about this verse off and on while we studied about
suffering and I can't quite get to the meaning. It is
clear in the following verse and all thru the next two chapters that
we are not shielded by God's power from suffering or even from death.
Any thoughts anyone?

Hi Melinda - Funny you asked that question. That same verse struck me
with uncertainty as well. I read through it several times in our
reading of chapter 1 trying to get my thoughts around it. I am no
sure if where I landed is accurate or not but here is where I settled
- perhaps being shielded by God's power is his protection of our
eternal gift of salvation. (like putting on our shield of armor to
battle the evil in this world) As long as we remain faithful to God
and focused on our christian life, God will protect us from the
earthly temptations if we let him. He promises that he is always with
us not matter what, protecting us from eternal harm if we only listen
and obey. So, even though we may suffer in this lifetime, he will
always be our shield/strength to help us get through it so our eternal
salvation will not be lost. I am not even sure I could put that in
words that make sense. Let me know if you need further explanation of
what is going through my mind. Perhaps someone else has a better
perspective to share too.

Melinda, & Kimberly - I also struggled with this. Kimberly, I like
your "eternal" perspective. I've been reading some about "kingdom
praying" lately & have noticed similar language. The promise that God
protects our eternal gift of salvation & protects us from earthly
temptation and eternal harm is powerful. It causes me to question the
temporal nature of so many of my prayers.

I also struggled with that phrase when I read through the first
chapter and even wrote it as a question in my margin. I like what
Kimberly says and my BIble references John 10:28, "I give them eternal
life, and they shall never perish".
