We enjoyed taking apart Sarah's Key at our last meeting. I think the
consensus was good premise, poor execution. It's fun to have a less
than perfect book sometimes.

Marja chose a book for us to read before our next meeting called
the Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. Rubin blogs here:
http://www.happiness-project.com/

We usually delay our August meeting by a week so we can all get
adjusted to school starting, so the next meeting will be August 12 at
10 at Karen's.

Have a great summer! If you read anything phenomenal, I want to know.

Greetings! Are we all winding up our summers? Oh, the places we've been! The things we've done or just didn't do!!! Totally love the release of summer.  Anyways, hope everyone enjoyed and benefitted from The Happiness Project. Thought it might be time well spent if we were to take pen to paper, or type, a little bit between now and our book club date 8/12. So for those who care to, respond to the following and bring your insights the day of or be communicating beforehand;

What makes you feel good?...

What makes you feel bad?...

Is there any way in which you don't feel right about your life?...

Do you have sources of an atmosphere of growth?...

...changes you might consider...identify specific, measurable resolutions...Resolutions work better when they're concrete, not abstract...find a strategy to assess your progress and to hold yourself accountable... devise [your] Resolutions Chart...identify your personal commandments--...Be[YOU]...[she]created the Happiness Project Toolbox Web site, www.happinessprojecttoolbox.com...You can record and score your resolutions(individual or group), keep a one sentence journal on any topic you like, identify your personal commandments..., keep any kind of list, and create an inspiration board of your favorite [whatevers]. Your entries can be kept private or made public, and you can also read other peoples entries!

Just thought there's a lot out there that would be great preps for our gathering.  See you then, happy friends, MARJA

Oh great idea for good discussion.  Let's see......

What makes me feel good:  Creating something, painting, working without distraction or noise is enormously soul satisfying to me.  A really hard workout, where I have pushed myself way past my comfort zone.  Playing a game with my kids.  Cooking dinner without a rushed schedule.  Catching up with a friend with whom I haven't connected with in a while.  Having a really spiritual moment while reading/studying my scriptures either by myself or with others.  These things make me feel really, really good.  Having a really clean and well organized home, that makes me feel really good.  Hard tho achieve this ideal.  Big piles of clutter makes me feel really bad.

What makes me feel bad:  Not having time to create, paint, do a project.  Makes me feel very resentful that I have not had time to create, an absolutely essential part of my makeup.  Not reading or praying as I should regularly, I start to feel bad, distant from the Spirit and anxious.  Thinking about loved ones I have lost too early makes me feel really sad, sorrowful, especially my baby,  if I dwell on the sadness and not the joy of the resurrection.

There are two areas in my home that are not well organized, and that makes me feel like I am not living my life as efficiently as I could.  That somehow it is keeping me from getting more done, it is sucking up too much time.  Mainly, my office and the office upstairs.

My sources of an atmosphere of growth begin with my day in scripture study.  Having a clear plan of my day and week, with achievable goals and concrete projects to finish, this helps me to grow.

Sorry I will miss the discussion next week.  I start a quarter-long job up at Adams next week.

My girlfriend and I read this book in spring 2010.  Our 'project':  Since we were both turning 40 this year, we created a "40 Fabulous Things to Do While We're 40" list.  It took about six months to create.  Three items were allowed to be big, expensive, and guilt-free (cruise, NYC marathon, 12 concerts in 12 months) and the other 37 were to be little things that we'd always wanted to do (grow my own Halloween pumpkin, triple scoop of ice cream, sleep under the stars).  We're each about 1/3 done with our list; we check-up with each other all the time.  We have to be done by our 41st in April / May.  Oh! how fun it's been creating, completing, and sharing the list.  My whole family is on board:  "We HAVE to go to the beach today so mom can fly a kite today.  It's on HER LIST."

I think this will be a yearly project.  And, the fun thing about getting older is each year the list will get one item longer!  I'm encouraging friends and my kids to create their list.  My baby turns 10 this weekend and he's the first of my kids to get his list going.  I promised him I'd help him achieve all on it so he's thinking big!

Enjoy Happiness ladies!

Love it Nayeli. Think I will have to steal your idea. Especially since next year is my 40 bday and I need 40 things to look forward to next year.
