Hi. I am a new user of the Brennan B2. I have it a month or so and am very happy with it so far.
I wish to use a spare power supply I have so I can disconnect my unit from the factory PS and speakers in one location, to different set of speakers and (spare PS) in another location. I can see from the shop that you recommend any 24V 3A PS, which I can purchase. I do have a similar PS here, but can you tell me if this is suitable for my B2? I don't want to end up blowing my new unit. Here's the spec of the PS
INPUT 100 - 240VAC, 50/60HZ 2.7A
OUTPUT 24V 5000mA

Many Thanks

Hi twinjocks,

That would work OK - the extra current (5 Amps) will not cause a problem.

I believe that the 5A rating means the PS is capable of providing that much current if required, but not necessarily force that much current.  Will the hardware experts please confirm or correct me?

Hi Twinjocks,

One important factor not mentioned in your post is whether the output voltage of your spare power supply is DC (direct current) or AC (alternating current).  This is critical to know, the Brennan requires 24 volts DC.

The current rating of 5 amps is fine for the Brennan.

Regards,
Peter.

Thanks Paul, Daniel and Peter for your replies. The PS is indeed AC to 24V DC. Here's a link to it on Amazon

The 24V 5A 120W option.

Many thanks all, I'll advise when I connect to spare PS to the unit. Might be a few days time. Cheers, Paul.

Hi Paul,

Yes that power supply will work well on your B2.

Hi Twinjocks,

Just to confirm - The B2 will only draw what current it needs even if the power supply is rated much higher. The most important rating is the voltage which is 24V maximum. It needs to be DC and the connector is: 2.1mm (the socket pin contact size), 5.5mm (barrel size), centre connector is + (positive) and the outer is - (negative).

Hi Paul (& All),

Just to report, I have been using my spare 5A power supply, and all is working as it should.

Again, many thanks,

Paul.

Does anyone know of a Power Supply I can purchase for the US? I'd love to do the same thing as the original poster.

Thank you so much!!!

Hi Elio,
I went to Amazon (US) and searched under Electronics for "AC Power Adapter 24v 3A Power Supply" and a bunch of options came up.  As long as the specs match what Paul has laid out in his post above, all should be well.  Don't forget to check the socket pin size.

Hi All

Has anyone ever tried a 24v Linear HiFi power supply such as  15W Ultra-Low Noise Linear Power Supply HIFI DC Regulated PSU 5V-24V Selection | eBay

Just wondering if it would make any noticeable difference in audio output quality?

Cheers

Chris

Hi Chris,

This power unit is only 15 watts.  The Brennan supply is rated at 72 watts, so this unit is under powered, especially if you are driving speakers directly from the B2.

I don't know if it would make any difference to audio quality.  I use the standard Breenan power unit and haven't noticed any hum or otherwise, but I have bad tinnitus so I might not notice!

Regards,
Peter.

When you talk about audible differences between power supplies, you're talking about tiny differences that only people with so-called "golden ears" can discern.  That's not to say that such differences don't exist.  But most people have not trained their ears to notice those differences.  Regardless of whether one can hear those differences or not, there are much greater differences between audio amplifiers.

The biggest differences in sound quality I've experienced with the B2 are these:
1) the difference between the B2 powering speakers directly vs when feeding the analog output to an external amp which then powers the speakers.  This was not subtle.  Personally, if there were not a better option than using the B2's internal amp, I would have sent mine back.
2) feeding the digital output to an external DAC.  That bypasses both the B2's internal amp, and its internal DAC.  This difference is less drastic (to my ears), but still significant.

I think it's fairly well understood in the audiophile world that big differences tend to overpower small differences.  To be able to appreciate any possible differences between power supplies, you must remove the greater problems you encounter in other areas.  For me, the order in which to address audible changes would be speakers, amplifier, and DAC, in that order.  Power supply is not even on my list.
