Total loss of sound

I have a brand new Brennan and have been happily ripping CDs to it. Suddenly, with no warning at all, the sound has stopped. Absolutely zilch. I am not conscious of having done anything. I have not accidentally ticked audio on HDMI.
I am connected to floor standing speakers via banana plugs and as late as yesterday early evening the system was working fine. Then suddenly the sound vanished.
How can I solve this?

Hi Michael,

If the speaker banana plugs at the B2 end are all metal, there is a chance that they could be touching each other (they are very close together physically) and thus shorting out.  If this is the case, inserting a piece of thin plastic between the connectors to act as an insulator would fix this.

Regards,
Peter.

Makes no difference. No sound whatsoever and no apparent reason for it.

Hi Michael,

I've just remembered another post with the same issue.  I think that the fix was to go to the 'Audio on HDMI' box and tick it.  Then untick it and see if the sound comes back.

Regards,
Peter.

Hi Mick,
You mentioned that your B2 was connected to floor standing speakers.  I wonder if these speakers are presenting too tough of a load for the little Brennan amp to handle and it has shut off for protection.  Do you know the impedance of your speakers?  Either way, turn off the B2 and let it sit for a bit.  If the unit feels hot, wait til it cools down some.  Then try again.

Standard advice:
Always leave the top of the unit clear, for air circulation.
Before powering down, press/hold the STOP button until SAVING appears in the display.  Wait til it reverts to the clock.  Then power down.  That ensures that if the processor was in the middle of something, it can complete it without causing any problem.

All was fine until this afternoon.  Now I get no sound playing through the attached Brennan  BSP50 speakers.  But, I do get sound to the Sonos  Move speaker.  When I select and try to play to the Brennan speakers, the moving (signal?) graph barely registers a blip.   What I'm experiencing seems to be different and unrelated to the any of the fixes described in this thread.  I'm also noticing that when I load a disc, the Web UI no longer displays the disc information - and doesn't offer the 'Rip' button.  I can still rip by pressing the main button on the B2.  Wondering if my new B2 is failing :-(

Hi Michael and mickf,

It does sound like there may be a fault with the B2's amplifier stage and we need to take a look at the unit. Please email us on -   thebrennanb2   @   gmail   .   com   - no spaces, with a brief description of the problem and we will get it sorted for you.

Please let us know where in the World you are (via the email) so we can send the relevant info.

Michael,

Does the B2 feel particularly warm or hot - the amplifier stage does have protection against adverse loads and over heating which will reset automatically if powered off for a while?

The Brennan B2 front panel does show 'Speaker: Wired'.
The webUI shows "Brennan'.
The 'Audio on HDMI (TV)' checkbox is NOT ticked.
Hitting play on any track: NO sound from the Brennan speakers.
If I select the Sonos speaker and play any track, I do get sound.
What next?

Hi Michael,
Bit of a straw clutch ...
Do you have anything plugged into the SPDIF/Line out ?
The rationale is -

Jack Sense

The normal behaviour of the B2 is to disable the loudspeakers/power amplifier if something is plugged into the SPDIF/Line out. It doesn’t matter whether it's optical or electrical.

If you would like the B2 to continue to drive the loudspeakers - because you want the B2 speakers in parallel - then you can disable this behaviour with

Settings -> Jack Sense -> Jack Sense Off

Hi John,
Nothing plugged in the Line Out/SPDIF on the back of the B2.  This is a new unit - only about 3 weeks old.  The unit did play through the Brennan speakers (and the Sonos) until 2 days ago.  Now, just the Sonos.  It has been suggested that the internal amplifiers on the B2 have quit, which seems to be the more likely situation given that all the other suggestions haven't fixed the problem.  I can still return the unit to Amazon, but I've already ripped, updated tracks/cover art, and set playlists from about 200 of my 800 CDs.  So I don't want to lose that work if I don't have to...
Thanks,
Michael

Hi Michael,

You can do an 'Export' backup which will copy your music files from the B2 to a USB stick or USB HDD to save your work.  I estimate that your 200 CDs to date probably uses about 50GB of space (if you are using FLAC compression) and would backup in just under two hours.

All you need to ensure is that the USB device is formatted to 'FAT32' format before you start the 'Export'.  The B2 does have a 'Format USB' function so you can use that if necessary.  You should always have at least one backup to hand; the B2 is a computer and hard drives can fail.  Your 800 CDs would require about 200GB of space (again if FLAC compressed) so a 500GB USB unit would give you plenty of 'future-proofing'.

The 'Export' function is found from the front panel menus at 'Main menu' --> 'USB Functions' --> 'Export to USB C'.  (or 'Export to USB A' if the USB device is plugged into USB A port)

Then when you get a replacement, use the 'Import' function to copy the 'Export' music files back into the new B2.  That will also complete in about two hours.

Regards,
Peter.

Thanks.  Replacement B2 ordered.  I have a 500GB SDD so I will start the backup process today.
