This may not be a new question but I am new to BB1 before I buy one I would like to know how simple it is to connect BB1 to an existing Sonos system

Hi Harry,

The BB1 has a NAS mode which will allow the Sonos system to access the music stored on the BB1. The BB1 needs to be visible to the device (computer, tablet, phone) you are running the Sonos app on, as a network drive. Then on the Sonos you load the BB1 as a 'Music Library'.

There is some basis setup info on the NAS and Sonos page on the website which needs updating as Sonos have changed the app..

Hi Paul,
I have a Sonos system but haven't yet managed to get it to recognise my BB1 so that I can load it to the music library.  I looked at the NAS and Sonos page on the website where it says to enable NAS 'settings, maintenance, start NAS' but on my web UI the settings and status window doesn't have a 'maintenance' heading or any mention of NAS.  Am I missing something really obvious here please?

Hi Jo,

You'll find 'Start NAS' in the Maintenance menu on the BB1 unit itself - 2nd from the bottom (above Advanced).

Having now got a BB1 I have tried to follow the steps to connect with my Sonos but cannot relate too the instructions from Paul.
Under Maintenance there are 10 entries from select Bluetooth through Delete youtube cache etc with the bottom entry being reset bluetooth no sign of Advanced or start NAS, am I on a different menu?

Despite resetting the wifi and starting the BB1 from scratch the web upgrade comes back failed.
the web address shows as 10.0.0.1 which is because I am using tp-link is this possibly the reason for failure?

Having read the on line manual more carefully I see that the address 10.0.0.1 is a no go however turning the Tp-link off and accessing my incoming broadband the BB1 still shows 10.0.0.1 as the address. Does this mean I need to go to another source to continue?

Check you don't have the hotspot switched on the bb1

Hi Harry,

The Web Upgrade won't work until you are connected to WiFi/Internet.

Firstly check that Hotspot is off (Settings menu) - it will show 'Hotspot On' when it's off. I would toggle it on and off just to make sure.

Now run Setup WiFi again. You need an IP Address like 192.168.1.127 or similar.

Paul. thank you for that, I now appear to have downloaded the latest software but the maintenance screen bares no relationship to what you suggest. From top to bottom Maintenance has 10 entries, not the three you suggest, and there is no entry for advanced and none for start NAS,

Hi Harry,

The first time you do the web upgrade (depends on software version) you need to power off and back on again to update the software.

Have you scrolled down the options in the Maintenance list? My sw version is Nov 18 2019 and I see - Select Bluetooth > Delete YouTube Cache > Delete all music > Scan Disk > Compress Now > Tone Presets - scroll down to see these - Image Demo > Web Upgrade > USB Upgrade > Reset Bluetooth > Start NAS > Advanced.

I am beginning to wonder whether I am thick or is there a basic set of instructions I have missed. Having updated the software and got on to wifi I went to me sonos app and went to Music Library set up.

My iMac is already there so I went to add shared music folder and assuming the answer to B2 applied to bb1 I put Brennan bb1 in Path/computer/sharename, then rout into user name and finally brennan into password ( all culled from answers to a question on B2) and the screen froze.

Obviously I am doing something wrong but what?

Hi Harry,

I assume you are running the Sonos app on the iMac. The BB1 needs to be visible on the iMac as a network device before it can be added as a Sonos library.

Hello Harry

Can I establish if you have been able to

1) Upgrade the software? What version do you now have?
2) Find and execute the Start NAS function?

I have no direct experience of MACs so I dont know how their equivalent to file explorer works but it is important to find out if the computer can see BB1/B2 on the network - before starting Sonos.

On my Windows computers the BB1 appears on the Network as BRENNANBB1 - no spaces all caps.

(Incidentally Windows 10 seems to have an issue with NAS drives - and you now have to enable this function - type "Windows Features" into the little box at the bottom left, click on the link to open the WIndows Features dialog then enable SMB and save - you will need to restart. Try Googling "Windows 10 cannot see NAS" for more videos and blogs)

Only when you can see BRENNANBB1 should you then start Sonos

Further to my previous message

I just want to make sure you understand that the Brennan BB1 will NOT operate as a loudspeaker in your Sonos system.

It will operate as a music store - hence the label NAS - Networked Attached Storage that we use.

Hi Paul,

I tried replying direct to you (from an earlier email) as under re setting up Sonos but have had no reply so guessing it may have got lost:

I've got NAS on, showing on pc as Network Media Device 'BrennanBTube:root' which Sonos tries unsuccessfully to connect to.  I've read message saying BRENNANBB1 has to show on pc, how do I get to that stage please?

Hope you can help, thanks

Using a NAS drive with Sonos

This was sent to me from Sonos after further attempts at diagnostic analysis.

Paul is the bb1 set up this way and have we been using the right paths?

NAS stands for Network-Attached Storage. A network-attached storage is a centralized repository device for all your data storage and file sharing needs. It connects to your network, making your music library songs accessible from all your devices, including Sonos.

Unlike a traditional hard drive that connects to your computer, a NAS drive comes equipped with an operating system that allows it to operate without the use of a computer. This is especially beneficial if you do not want to keep your computer on at all times, or turn it on every time you want to play music. Storing your music on a NAS drive eliminates the need for a computer, saves energy, and allows access to your music at all times.

Requirements for using a NAS with Sonos
Sonos works with any NAS drive that supports the SMB(v1) / CIFS file sharing protocol. Sonos does not recommend any particular model of NAS drives.

Adding music stored on my NAS to my Sonos Music Library
Before attempting to add the NAS drive to your music library, gather the following information (typically found in the NAS drive’s web configuration page, or within the software that came with the device):

  1. Network path of the NAS drive (examples below)
  2. Username and password (if required) for the shared folder

Examples of default network path and parent folders of common NAS drives:

  • MyBookLive - \\MyBookLive\Public
  • WD MyCloud - \\WDMYCLOUD\Public
  • GoFlex Home - \\GoFlex_Home\GoFlex Home Public
  • Apple Time Capsule - \\TimeCapsuleName\Data
    • All the necessary information for Apple Time Capsule can be found in the AirPort Utility. Please note that there is no specific username for the Time Capsule, you can use anything for the username (just don't leave it blank), but the password will be your Time Capsule password.

Once you have the necessary information above, you can use any Sonos controller to add the NAS drive to Sonos.

    • On iOS or Android: From the Settings tab, tap System > Music Library > Music Library Setup and tap Add Shared Music Folder.
    • On Mac or PC: Select Manage > Music Library Settings. Click “+” (Mac) or “Add” (PC) and select the third option; “On a networked device such as a network attached storage (NAS) drive.” Follow the in-app instructions to complete the setup.

    Troubleshooting tips

    • SMB requires that the computer name is no more than 15 characters, with no special characters or spaces. Make sure your NAS drive's name is not too long. Consult with the manufacturer for information on how to change the NAS drive name.
    • Don’t use mapped drive letters when entering the path to the NAS (e.g., Y:\\). The drive letter is only recognizable by the computer it is mapped to.
    • If your playlists are missing after adding the NAS to your music library, make sure to copy the playlist file to the shared folder on the NAS drive.
    • If you are unable to access the music library on the NAS, try accessing the drive from another device, such as your computer, to confirm it is powered on and available.

Hi all   I am unable to connect my BB1 to my Sonos system, getting an 'Access to the shared folder \\BRENNANBB1\music is denied' error message when attempting to add the music folder using the Sonos app.The NAS enabled BB1 appears as a computer on my Windows 10 network along with my B2 and I can transfer music between them via NAS. I can also directly connect to the BB1' (and play music) using Skyjos File explorer. My B2 has continued to work normally with Sonos and the permissions to both the BB1 and B2 music folders appear to be identical. However, I have noticed that every time I connect the BB1 to my network, a BrennanBTube root  icon appears under 'Media devices' (in addition to the BRENNANBB1 entry in the 'Computer' section of the network), so it appears that somehow DNLA is enabled on the BB1. I have no idea why this should be as I've certainly not enabled it and, as far as I'm aware, there is no option to do so on the BB1 menu. I'm assuming that it is DNLA that is causing the Sonos connection problem, although I've not seen any definite confirmation on the forum that this may be the case. Repeated attempts to upgrade the the software dated 24th December by USB failed though the web upgrade dated 31st December was successful, but there was no option to 'Stop DNLA'. I would be very grateful for any advice you could give me on how to resolve this situation
