I've an early B2 with SD card visible. I tried to record a few songs yesterday, which are on the SD card. I used Get Recordings, and the transfer started. Ten minutes later, the transfer was still not OK.. I now get a warning that the HDD is read only. I have tried to reformat the hard disc but this action is blocked. Any ideas?

Do not reformat the hard disk unless you know you have a good backup of your music collection. Reformatting will delete all the content!

Regarding your Read only issue, you can still make a backup if you need to, the read issue will allow that.

Then there is a wealth of instructions in this forum if you search on how to deal with an HDD Read Only issue.

I'm not 100% certain, but I think so.

Run the "Use SD" command (Maintenance menu).  I think the unit will reboot.
Wait for it to display "Soure: SD Card" in the scrolling information on the front panel display.
Open the WebUI and see what's there.  You should be able to recognize whatever name was given to the recording(s).
Then, using the three dots by the track or album, you should be able to delete what you want.
When you're done with that...
Run the "Use HDD" command (Maintenance menu).  Wait for reboot and for it to say "Source: Hard Disk" on the front display.

With the Use SD and Use HDD commands, sometimes it takes more than one try to get it to take (so you're prepared, just in case).

If you have a backup of the HDD then to reformat it you need to turn off NAS and DLNA then try the format HDD command. If the still does not work set the unit to use the SD Card (as above) and reboot. Then try the format HDD again.

Hi billsp...,

Below is a procedure that I gave for another user who could not get his B2's HDD to format.

Firstly, do you have a backup (Export) of your music collection stored on a USD HDD or memory stick?  If you do, then I think that the way forwards is as described below in steps 1 to 8.

Assuming that you have a backup, then the best way of fixing this is to format the HDD, then 'Import' your collection back on to the B2 from the USB device

1.  Select 'Settings' --> 'Maintenance' --> 'Stop NAS'

2.  Select 'Settings' --> 'Maintenance' --> 'Use SD'

3.  Power the B2 down, wait 30 seconds and power up.  (This step is important)

4.  Select 'Settings' --> 'Maintenance' --> 'Advanced' --> 'Format HDD'

If at this point you see an error message on the front panel display, the it is is probable that the internal HDD has failed with a hardware fault.

If you see a message ‘Partitioning’ briefly followed by another message ‘Formatting’ which should show for a time between approximately 2 and 5 minutes, depending on the capacity of the HDD then the HDD is formatting and you should continue to step 5.

If ‘Formatting’ disappears after a few seconds then the format has failed, then the above steps 3 and onwards should be repeated.  If the problem persists then the HDD is probably faulty.

5.  When the format has completed select 'Settings' --> 'Maintenance' --> 'Use HDD'

6.  Select 'Settings' --> 'Maintenance' --> 'Start NAS'

7.  Plug the USD backup device back into the B2

8.  Select ‘USB Functions’ --> 'Import from C’ (or ‘A’)

If the format fails after a couple of attempts then it is likely that the HDD has suffered a hardware failure.  In this case, contact Brennan through this Forum and request further assistance.

Regards,

Peter.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have deleted the recordings from the SD card and that cleared the read only warning. Ripping cd works fine. Tested the recording via SD this morning and the fault re-occured. Failed to transfer. Do I need a new SD card?

That is a possibility, that you need a new SD card.  I think the minimum size you need is 8GB, if you can still find one that small.  Larger is no problem.

Hi Billsp...,

The new SD Card will need to be programmed before it will work with the B2 - it contains the operating software. Have a look at our Techy Stuff page - link - for more info and the downloads.

Hi, Thanks to all for helpful advice. A reformat of HDD seems to have solved the recording transfer problem.

Hi Billsp...,

It sounds like your HDD had an area on the disk that had become corrupted to some degree.  Then when you used 'Get Recordings' to copy the music from the SD to the HDD, the B2 would hit the corrupted area.  It would then put the HDD into 'Read only mode' automatically to protect the music folder.  So the reformat of the HDD has fixed the problem.

Regards,
Peter.
