Hi there. Just purchased a used Brennan B2 and can not get any power from the USB ports. Tried with different types of dongles which works in the pc but not in the Brennan. They don’t even light on as they do when plugged in the pc. Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

were these dongles supplied with the B2 ?

Are they all Wi-Fi ?

Not all Wi-Fi dongles are created equal !

Only certain chipsets are known to work with the B2.

A USB dongle with the RT5370 chipset and built-in antenna are known to work  - an example here - link

My Bluetooth and WiFi dongles don't light up, but they do work.

I just took a known good USB stick (disk) that lights up when plugged into my computer, and plugged it into the B2's USB port C, and when the B2 powered up, the light came on on the USB stick.  If you have a USB stick that you know to be good that lights up, and it doesn't light up in the B2, then I think that's a pretty good indication that the B2 is not powering that USB port.

Hi Trenc...,

Not all WiFi and Bluetooth dongle types will work with the B2 so best to check the ports with a USB memory stick with an LED as Daniel suggests.

The memory stick will not be recognised by the B2 if it is not FAT32 formatted. Formatting the USB stick would be a good test of the USB ports - plug the stick into either port and use the front control to navigate to the Maintenance menu, select Format USB A or USB C. This will erase all data on the stick.

Thanks for your comment. I've formatted the USB stick to FAT32 and still no power and USB not recognised. Is there any other way to test it? Kind regards.

Did you format the USB stick on the B2?  If not, the B2 may still not recognize it until you format it on the B2.  The B2 will behave as if there is nothing connected.  That is normal, just ignore it and go ahead with the Format USB C command.  Of course, if there really is no power to the UWB port, then that command will finally fail.

The B2's USB ports are "taken" off the USB ports of the internal Raspberry Pi single board computer in the Brennan B2. I think they also power/Connect the B2's HDD and CD drive so if these are working there will be power going to the B2's USB ports.

If you are having difficulty seeing a USB disk, plug the B2's USB WiFi dongle into one of the B2's (A or C) USB ports and then connect to your house WiFi. If you con do this then this too proves the USB ports are working.

Thanks John. Tried that but still no power from USB. This thing drives me mad. There must be a solution. Thanks.

Yes, that's the problem They don't show any sign. They don't blink when connected to B2. Thanks.

Thanks Daniel. That was a good idea, but when tried the command gave message partitioning, done and nothing actually happened. USB drive still hasn't been formatted. (I left a music file on it just to check).

Hi Fred. Thanks for your comment. When I insert wi-fi dongle it doesn't recognise it at all. I can confirm that CD drive and Hard Drive works perfectly but still no power from USB. Can I measure this somehow? Thanks.
