Can anyone help with this?

Some time ago I put my whole CD library on B2 using both the built-in CD player and an external CD player. Now I want to add a single  disc to my library.

While B2 will accept other discs it does not register the subject disc, which is store-bought and perfectly kosher. B2 whirs busily and then falsely claims there is no CD inside.

I tried an external CD player on USB port C, but it will not accept insertion of the subject disk, nor indeed any disc.

Both the external CD player and the subject disc work perfectly on my computer.

So what's going on?

Hi ,

does the CD have any enhanced content like video clips or internet links ?
The B2 does not like these whereas most other computers/software just ignore non-audio content when ripping.

Hi Randomthou...,

Try - use the front control to navigate to Settings >> Maintenance >> Advanced >> Reset CD and then try the CD again.

You could also try doing a Web Upgrade - Settings menu - to make sure the B2 is running the latest software.

You do need to power off the B2 before connecting the external CD Drive as it is detected during the boot up sequence.

Thank you both for your advice. I've done the web upgrade. And I have been powering off before inserting the external drive. The internal disk drive will register some discs but not others.  The external drive refuses to accept any attempt to insert a disk - though it works perfectly well with my computer.

Any further thoughts?

Hi Chuck,

out of interest, what is the name of the CD causing you grief ?

Hi Chuck,
Thanks for the CD details.
Mhairi Hall - Airs
As you may know the B2 uses a public database, Musicbrainz, to retrieve CD details.
I did a search of the Musicbrainz database on my computer for Mhairi Hall CDs and it could find only one CD and not the CD you have.
I double checked by searching on the CD catalogue number STRATH003CD and again nothing found.
I think this is why you cannot rip this particular CD.
The software release of Sept 17th did have a fix for similar issues but if you are still having problems then it looks like some remain.
I know you did a web upgrade of the software but can you confirm the version you have installed
In particular are you on the B2 Or B2B version ?

Hi Chuck,

Did you try 'Reset CD' - Advanced menu?

Hi Paul,

Yes, I've tried the 'reset CD'. No joy. What do you think of John's analysis above? Will Brennan fail to accept a disc if it's not on the data base?

I don't know if I'm on B2 or B2B, nor how to find out.

Hi Chuck,

You can find out your software version via the webUI or using the remote

Using the remote
Press the info button
On the B2 display you will see
   - Total Tracks, Albums & Artists
   - Number of WAV, FLAC, MP3 and AAC tracks
   - HDD capacity and usage
   - Total Tracks,

Press a second time to see -
   - Software version
   - MAC address

Using the webUI
On the top a bit in from the left is a little cog wheel click on that and you get a panel of information displayed which includes the software version.
This link shows what that info panel looks like

Hi Chuck,

I would have thought the B2 would offer 'Album 123' (example) if no title can be found. Let us know what version software your B2 is running.

Hi Paul,
My rationale, and the reason for asking Chuck about his software version, is that the Musicbrainz fix was originally only in the B2B Sept 17th release. I know that the B2 20th Sept release is meant to include the more recent B2B enhancements/fixes but wonder whether the Musicbrainz fix made it successfully across ?

Thanks all, for the advice. This is what I'm running on Brennan: Software Version B2 Sep 20 2021

The drive will accept some discs. But here's another, of three selected at random, which it does not accept:
Zoltan Kodaly, Hary Janos suite, Chandos CHAN8877

The other issue is why an external drive (Apple) not function in the Brennan USB C channel?

Hi Chuck,

I ran a search  of your Chandos CD and that one is found in the Musicbrainz database which suggests there may be other reasons for your problems.

You will have seem my earlier post to Paul @ Brennan regarding possible differences between the B2 and B2B versions of the software and the fix that was added.
I am sure he will respond tomorrow now that you have confirmed your software version.
As regards the Apple CD drive I seem to recall seeing an earlier post on this forum stating that Apple drives do not work with the B2.

Hi All,

I've just been looking on the Web on articles regarding Apple external CD/DVD drives.  It looks like they are not natively compatible with Windows either.  For Windows to work with Apple drives you need to download and install a special software driver.  So Apple CD/DVD drives are only compatible with other Apple products.

So I would be 99% certain that the Apple unit will not be compatible with the B2.

Somewhat of a pain, but Apple does work hard to be incompatible with non-Apple devices and products.

Regards,
Peter.

Hi John,

The MusicBrainz fix is included in the  b2 20th Sept 2021  update, so that's not the problem.

Chuck,

Where in the World are you, as Martin B would like to try your CDs?

Hi All,

Thanks to all for your continued help. One thing is clear: the Apple disc drive is not compatible. I now recollect I did use another drive, now mislaid, to upload my library.

I'm in London, NW8.

Apple peripherals ONLY work with Apple devices ( which is why I won't touch Apple products)

Some new information. I rediscovered the non-Apple CD player which I originally used to upload my library on to Brennan. Now that will not work either. I connect it when Brennan is turned off. It will accept the discs but does not register any - even those that will register on the internal disc drive.  And the internal disc drive will not register those if the CD player is plugged in.

Try main menu - setings - maintenance - advanced - Reset CD  command from the front controls.

Also USB port A has more power than port C , and if you have one a powered USB port extender hub may help ( it could be a power issue ).

Hi Chuck,

You do need to power the B2 off before connecting the external CD Drive and the internal one doesn't work with an external drive connected.

I'll email you about the CDs for Martin.
