Hello dear forum members,
It was agreed with Martin that I should post this info. in case others should wonder:
It's perfectly OK to extract the drive from an old (dead) B2 and install it in a newer model. No need to backup/restore, all the music is still there.
My new B2 now proudly sports a totally silent 525Gb Crucial SSD, which I was quite happy to reuse.
