Flashing/Updating SD card

Hello all,

The B2B firmware on my SD card is dated 22nd October.

I like to keep a spare that is up to date, the spare I have is dated 18th June. However, on trying to update it in the B2, the display showed ‘update failed’.

I re-flashed the card from the website (noting that the date on this was also still June 18th, but again the update failed in the B2.

Is this likely to be an SD card problem, should the update be done in some other way, or is there no current update to the June 18th version available?

The B2 is still running fine using the original October 22nd version, but concerned in case I should not now be using that for some reason.

Hi Paul,

The "update failed" would be caused if your B2 is not connected to the internet properly, can you play the internet radio Ok on your B2?

Yes, radio fine, B2 assigned an I.P.  address as expected.

Are you doing the Update using the Front menu

Hi Paul,

If your old card works ok but the new one will not, perhaps try flashing a NEW SD Card , it does not need to be a large one, anything over 8Gb will do.

Just retried to format the old card, and pc does not recognise it!!

I’ll buy another and report back in a couple of days!

Wonder if Paul (good name) at mission control may be able to update the current firmware on the website for future flashing?

p.s. thought afterwards the SD card may have been locked, but it wasn’t, saves my embarrassment anyway!!!

Which link are you using to download the software?

As a test you could try downloading the 'Experimental' version - several of us have been using without a problem - which should be dated Dec 15 2021.

When the new SD card comes, I'll try that one again, and check that it updates OK in the B2.

If all is well, I'll give the experimental version a go!

OK let us know how it goes with the new card.

You ca update the software to Oct 22 2021 after flashing the SD card by running Web Upgrade.

The 'Experimental' software has to be loaded manually using a USB stick and SW Upgrade.

Morning Paul

New SD card flashed to June software, then updated to October in the B2, all OK!

I've tried to upgrade to the December version without quiet so much success!

Downloaded the ZIP file, but when I try to flash the SD card using etcher, I am getting a message "Missing partition table, not a bootable image"

I am getting the option to continue, and etcher is flashing something to the card. Plugging into USB C on the B2 and running SW upgrade, the front display shows loading, but on rebooting, the software version is not changing from October!

I'm sure I'm missing a step somewhere, can you point me in the direction of an idiots guide to the operation, either on the website, or one that a forum member has previously posted?

Hi Paul R,

For the first stage you are OK, using balenaetcher to flash the SD card with the Jun 18 2021 image.  You don't use the balenaetcher again in this process.

Then using 'Web Upgrade' to get to Oct 22 2021 is also good.

For the final stage, download the 'Dec 15 2021' file (this filename is b2b.tar.gz) from the Brennan website 'Experimental' section. Then, using a PC/Mac, copy this file to a USB stick (formatted FAT32) as it is. 

Then plug the USB stick into the B2.

From the front panel knob, select 'Settings' --> 'Maintenance' -- 'SW Upgrade' and click on this.

The B2 should load this file and update itself and  the version should now show as 'B2B Dec 15 2021'

As you swiftly spotted, I was trying to flash the downloaded experimental software instead of just copying!!

I now have  the B2 running the January version (newer again!!),  and a backup card with the October version on it just in case.
