Export to USB C backup problem

I have a 2TB B2 with most current software version, trying to backup to my 2TB portable HDD (formatted to FAT32).  I connect my external HDD to USB C, go to USB Functions --> Export to C, then screen indicated it started exporting song files, but after a few minutes returns to default Ready screen (not frozen), then after several more minutes screen stays at "standby."  I plugged the portable HDD into my computer to check to see if any music files copied, and no files copied.  This problem repeats every time I try it.  I suppose I could buy a new portable HDD or SSD, reformat it and try again, but what if the problem is in my B2? 

I've also tried to backup by copying the NAS folders to my computer over wifi (my ethernet connection to B2 doesn't work either), but after more than 50 hours, only 60% of files were copied, and due to time constraints, I had to shut it down.

Is it possible to backup directly to my iMac?  By direct USB  connection?  By direct ethernet connection?
