Strange goings on here and I don't know if it is related to the B2 rather than by Sonos, but I'd thought I'd start here :)

My Sonos speakers (all Ones and One SLs) stopped fetching music from my B2. This has happened occasionally and is usually fixed by a reboot of the B2 and/or deleting and re-adding it to the Sonos Music Library section of the Sonos app.

This time that didn't work. It lets me add the folder and doesn't squawk at the user/password, then goes into "Now Updating Music Library" and never finishes (usually takes a few minutes but after 12+ hours still going)

I tried adding a music folder from my iMac to the Sonos and that worked as expected.

NAS is turned on, I can see the B2 from my iMac just fine.

If I call up the B2 web interface, I can select music (e.g.a  playlist) and the Sonos I want and it shows up in the queue of the speaker I selected and plays. So the two are talking to each other,.

I've tried this with the Sonos Apple, iPhone. iPad and Android app with the same effect.

So I'm not dead in the water, I can play music, it just takes an extra step.but since I'm old and crusty that makes me grumpy :)

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks,

Fred

Hi Fred

Can you see the B2's NAS using the file explorer utility of your PC/Mac?

This answer came to my email but does not appear to be here!

Yes, it shows up file with my iMac (after doing “Connect to Server” in the Finder)

And I can add folders on my iMac to the Sonos Library.

I first thought maybe it was something I added to the B2 but I haven’t added any new music in a couple of weeks (and the Sonos is set to re-index every night)

Thanks
Fred

Hi Fred

Well the B2's NAS seems to be working OK then.
Are you playing the content of the B2 (through NAS) using the Sonos App as the control?
or
Driving the Sonos speakers using the B2's Web UI interface ?

Also if you have been adding stuff to the B2 using the NAS, have you run a "Scan Disk" on the B2 (Not that this should affect the Mac or Sonos App's view of the music).

If all else fails power everything off (including the router) then power everything back on starting with the Router then the Sonos speakers then the B2. This may clear the issue. You could also try (from the Sonos App) deleting the B2's Sonos Music Library and then re installing it.

Hi Fred

In respect of my last post please DO NOT delete the B2 music, merely from within the Sonos App the Sonos link that point to the B2's Music.
I don't want you inadvertently emptying you B2 of it Music :-))

Hi Fred,

I usually drive the Sonos with the Sonos app. I have an iPad in each room where I have a Sonos set and I find the presentation more to my liking than the B2 Web UI. Since the problem arose, what I do is load the Sonos queue (usually with a B2 playlist) from B2 Web UI and then switch to the Sonos app to see what is playing and to skip tracks. So Sonos can see the B2 NAS, it just won't index it. ???

I have tried multiple times to add the B2 library to a Sonos app -- I've tried the Mac app, iPhone, iPad and Android (not all at the same time :)  ) and with the same result. That why I think the issue is on the B2 side (not definitive, I know)

I have rebooted the B2 a number of time to no effect. Some of the Sonos are hard to reach for power, so I haven't done that. My router automatically reboots in the wee hours of Sunday morning so we'll see if that has any effect.

If it never goes back the way it was, I can live with it. My queue is usually a few hundred classical works (concatenated so 1 track = 1 work) so the queue lasts a long time :)

Thanks

LA Fred.

Hi  LA Fred

Which Version of the Sonos App are you using?
Also how is your B2 connected up - WiFi or Ethernet?
Also i actually don't know where the Sonos App stores it "index" of the B2's music holdings.  Is there a "master" that all your "Sonos" App Ipads etc are looking at or are they all trying to build their own?
If the latter is the case try doing it with just one - When I used the Sonos App I did the index using my PC (which I leave on most of the time) and subsequently the Android version seemed to work (just knew about what the PC had indexed) straight off.

I believe that the Sonos music index is stored on each Sonos player.

Hi All

I came across this in the Sonos support documentation

I wonder if Fred (original poster) is coming up against a Sonos memory issue ?

This app might prove useful

If as tcbu says, there are multiple copies of the library index being made (if I understood correctly what tcbu said) then it could take a VERY VERY long time for all that indexing to complete! - just a thought!

Not sure that follows, Fred. Sonos will index only once and then replicate its index across devices. Mine certainly doesn’t take long to update (about 25000 tracks), although I can no longer recall how long it took from scratch.

Thanks all, information requested...

My devices are all S2, bought in the last year or so
Two One/One SL pairs (on both, the One is wired ethernet, the One SL wireless)
  Standalone wireless One
  Roam (obviously wireless)

I have 17000 or so tracks, more than half (2/3?) classical. The classical tracks probably have more metadata than is usual in that each track is a complete work. That is, on the CD a given symphony would be four tracks (one for each movement) in my system it is one track.

I don't think it is a Sonos memory issue, though. I took my B2 backup and copied it to a large external drive I have on my iMac. The Sonos app will index that in a few minutes.

I actually already had the Phonos Plus app. It tells you how much memory (1024M for the One, 512M for the One SL) but not how much is used.

I guess I will just run the Sonos from my iMac, rather than the B2.

Cheers,
LA Fred

Hi LA Fred,

It sounds like you have run a lot of diagnostics without much joy but I don't know whether you have seen this answer to a similar sounding post on the Sonos forum ?

quote

What i'm guessing is going on, since you haven't changed anything other than updating, is that the speaker isn't properly connected to your wifi, and is bouncing off and on for some reason, which is why it's taking so long for the process to finish.

Unfortunately, updating Sonos' software can expose issues with the IP address table in your router, due to the fact that the process includes a soft reboot of the speaker, and it requests a new IP address.

There's a quick and dirty way of fixing this, and a slightly more difficult, but longer term fix. The short one is to power off your Sonos speaker, then reboot your router. Once the router has finished rebooting, plug that Sonos speaker back in to power, and let it boot up. Then try running that re-index, and see if it finishes.

The longer term fix to this problem is to go in to the router's IP table, and set up a reserved/static IP for the speaker. Since I took this step, I haven't had an issue.

Hi LA Fred,

Having just read a post from 'Pkar' about problems he is having with his Roam speaker (having it on appears to wreak havoc with the rest of his Sonos's), I wondered if it may be worth trying turning the Roam off whilst adding the B2 library.

I just saw that and will give it a try. Though I've had the Roam for a long time and I'm not sure why all of a sudden it would interfere.

Thanks,

LA Fred

Sorry for the delay in responding -- real life has intruded a bit :)

I power off my Roam and it had no effect -- the indexing just goes on forever.

I basically am not using the B2 anymore -- I copied my B2 backup to my desktop hard drive and shared that with the Sonos app. I really wanted an "appliance" on my network to stream music rather than a computer.  I will look at attaching a drive to my router and use that.

Thanks for all your suggestions,

LA Fred

Hi LA Fred,

Martin released some 'experimental software' on the Latest Software page (left hand column) - it's not strictly experimental but contains some fixes/updates ahead of a general release - which includes some changes to the Play to Sonos software. It has to be loaded manually using a USB stick and the SW Upgrade - Maintenance menu and can be overwritten with a Web Upgrade.

A couple of Sonos users have reported it fixed their problems (usually the 'overflow' message).

No reported issues with it so safe to try. It is dated Dec 15 2021.
