Hi

I’m close to purchasing the b2 & primarily for cd ripping. However, I have a number of mini discs which I’d like to move onto the b2. Has anyone done this? I guess I’d need to somehow transfer the mini disc onto a usb stick?

Any advice welcome.

Thanks
Simeon.

I'm under the impression that some MiniDisc players have the ability to transfer their files to a computer in digital format.  My unit does not have that capability.  If yours does, then, depending on the format, you may not have to do any conversion.  But if your unit is like most of them, you'll have to convert the files from their analog output to digital files.  This is easily done on the computer using an analog connection from the MD player to the computer, and any program, such as Audacity (free download) that can do the analog to digital conversion.  Choose the file format that you ultimately want on your B2: FLAC, or MP3.

Once you have all the songs converted to individual track files, make sure they are grouped into folders for Artist \ Album \  tracks.  You will need a USB stick or disk that is formatted as FAT32 (no other format will work, not exFAT, not NTFS, nothing else).  If it's not already in FAT32 format, the B2 can do that for you.

Then copy the music files to the USB disk under a folder named music.  Once that is all setup, use the Import USB C (or A) command to copy all the files onto the B2.

Since I don't know your level of understanding, I did not go into too much detail at any one point.  So if you need clarification on anything, post back here and someone will be glad to give you more details.

Daniel capitalized the words "Mini Disc" but you didn't. Are you really talking anbout Sony's proprietary hardware format that used their own lossy compression codec called ATRAC? or are you just referring to the 3"-diameter CDs that were issued for a time as "CD-singles"? The small CDs ("mini discs", no capital letters) are normal CDs, just don't ever try to use them in a slot-loading CD drive.

If you have a tray-load CD drive, wither in a computer or as a USB device, you can rip those just like any other CD. OTOH, Mini Discs (capital letters) should be copied by playing and capturing the audio, then storing in a lossless format.

Well I guess that is the question:  Are we talking about MiniDiscs or the 3" CDs.  It didn't even occur to me that it might have been 3" CDs, because other than being too small for a slot loaded CD drive, they're the same as any other CD.

My Sony MiniDisc player is connected to my desktop. I transfer by playing music on my MD player & recording through Audacity. If you open Sound-->Recording-->Line-In-->Properties-->Levels on your PC, you can control the sound recording level on Audacity to prevent distortion (I find level 59 ideal, depending on quality of source). At end of recording, you can save the audio file (WAV) to a designated folder on your desktop to review sound quality. Then follow the procedure as described by Daniel ie Artist/Album/Tracks, etc before copying to USB stick & importing to B2 via USB C. Hope this helps.

Thankyou all for the support. Very helpful. It’s a Sony Walkman  net md. The discs are recordable with various music on them. So, it looks like I can transfer them to the b2.
Thankyou
Simeon.
