NAS Drive not showing on the network

I have just started to get going with a brand new B2 with 400Gb Solid State Drive bought just two weeks ago, soley to work as a music server.  I have gone through the menu settings and set NAS to on which shows on the front panel status OK.  I have given the B2 a static IP address outside the DHCP range and that is all OK.  On my network, I can see everything that is connected including a WD MyCloud NAS drive - but not BrennanB2 as expected.  I can however map the drive \\IPaddress\music which means that it is definitely on the network OK.  Any help would be appreciated as I need it to be a NAS drive to be able to use it with the Bose WiFi speakers that we are using.  They can see the library on my computer and on the WD Drive so looks like that side of things is going to be OK - just this hurdle I hope.  Ian P

Hi Ian P,

Are you using Windows 10 or a MAC computer to view your network?

I am using Windows 100 - but neither the Bose wifi speaker nor Samsung smart TV can see the drive either and I think that they are running Linux

Thank you for taking an interest in this;  disappointing if something needs to be set up on the B2 that cannot happen from the front panel or UI - after all this is brand new.  I don't think that it is a Windows problem as apart from the Windows PCs - one of which is Win 7 and other non-windows devices on the same network cannot see BRENNANB2 as a NAS drive whereas they can see other NAS storage devices.  I have a feeling that something needs to be enabled or disabled in either the B2 or the Router but so far have not come up with anything

I assure you that if NAS is turned on on the B2 then the Brennan unit IS correctly working as a NAS. The only limitation of the B2 is that is that the NAS will not be very fast because the computer in the B2 providing the NAS functionality is only a small "credit card sized" Raspberry Pi.
The NAS provided is not something that Brennan have invented/coded, it is a standard Linux NAS.

To make the B2 a NAS do this.
From the front panel and using the round knob (press to select, rotate to choose) go "Main Menu" > "Settings" > "Maintenance" > "Start NAS".

After this the B2 will deliver a NAS to its contents on your Home Network, whenever it is powered up.

Then if you have a Windows 7 PC go into file explorer and you should be able to see the B2's NAS    It will be appear as  "BRENNANB2\music" and the User ID to access it is "root" and the password is "brennan" - you will be asked for these by windows as you try and connect.

thanks Fred for your detailed reply.  I understand all this and I went through the steps one more time.  As I mentioned, I have mapped the B2 as a network location  \\IPaddress\music which shows on the Win 10 machine once mapped.  I turned NAS off on the front of the B2 and it then became non-available which shows that the share is indeed working.  However, brennanb2 does not  show up as a NAS drive as the WD MyCloud does on the Win 10 or Win 7 computer - or indeed on the Linux or Androd devices on the same network.  This is why I wondered if threre is something else needed - in the B2 or Router perhaps ??

Thanks again
Ian P

I think you will find the problem lies with Windows 10. In my experience Windows 7 worked  much better with Network devices. Try re-booting your PC it often needs that to enable it to find devices although refreshing Network can sometimes work. You do have to wait a while for the Brennan to load.

Hi

Windows will not Mapp a drive to the B2 automatically, you will need to create a small batch file something like "net use B: \\192.168.1.*\music /Persistent:no /user:root brennan"  (remove quotes and replace the IP with the IP of your B2)

You can either run this manually each time you boot up your PC or place it in the start up folder.

Remember it can take ages for the connection to be made (I have waited over 15 mins before)

Hope this helps

Hi Ian,

The fact that you could map a Windows 10 mapped drive to the B2 (when the NAS was ON), indicates that the B2 unit is delivering a NAS to your home network. With my home network, I have a Amazon Fire Android tablet (on which I have installed Google Play), and using this and the "ES File Explorer" app on that I can see the B2 NAS "BRENNANB2" just fine.

We are all running the same software on our Brennans (assuming you are on the latest version).
Routers do not normally get in the way.

Thank you everyone - I have continued with my logical progress and find that the post that Fred pointed me to worked "if you are using Windows 10 you may need to turn on SMB1.0 - please see this post - link - for details".  Confidence that NAS was actually working helped move me on to trying other things - and the other red herring was that the control app for Bose runs in Windows and unless the SoundTech app could "see" the NAS drive, it couldn't map the B2 as a music library.  Very grateful.  Ian P

Out of interest ny Windows 10 machines didn't need me to write the  batch file suggested by Chris  to enable them to see the B2 as a NAS, but Samba did need to be activated first of all  in Settings, and the log in filled in as suggested above.  ( the last time I wrote and executed a batch file was in the  previous century! ) After that the B2 can be seen as a NAS on every boot up and is represented by a desktop shortut. ( Not sure what Samba is but the full  instructions for doing  this are easily found by a bit of Googling.)  Also Im not sure if there any need to set a static IP for the B2 as you have suggested . Mine has changed a few times now.
Personally if I wanted a proper NAS drive to act as a Music Server I'd have bought a much cheaper and faster (than the B2) dedicated NAS box with mirrored drives to do this. As it is I have two backup drives in case the B2 should ever fail in any way. ( It already has but was easily fixed ) . One is a USB HD which I regularly back up (export)  using  USB port C on the B2. The other is a Network attached USB drive , to my router's USB port,  with the otiginal  ripped WAV files on it.
But I like the Brennan's web interface and the  app and all the other combined facilties such as internet radio, YouTube, bluetooth, optical output and eventually the integration with Spotify and Sonos - which I have yet to explore . It's a very well designed and conceptualised machine in a very neat package.
