I want to update the database that recognises CDs so that I don'y have to key everything in but it's been so long since i last did it that i've forgotten how to. I can't even find my notes.  Is there any kind person out there who could jog my memory please?

Hi rocwal...,

It shouldn't be necessary to download the CDDB if your B2 or BB1 is connected to WiFi and the internet, as it will use the online CDDB.

Have you updated the software recently - Web Upgrade - Settings menu?

I was under the impression that Brennan's now use the Musicbrainz's database as opposed to the defunct FreeDB? - I thought (possibly wrongly), that downloading the FreeDB as it was up-to-the point it was closed down, allowed you find track-listings that haven't been updated on the more recent Musicbrainz's database but had on the FreeDB version? - Like I said, could be wrong but it has certainly improved 'hits' since I downloaded the FreeDB version...

Kindest Regards,

Christian

Hi Christian,
When you download the database to the B2, does it give you a choice of which DB to download?  I thought you just got what was current.

Hi Daniel,

I just followed this part of the instructions.  I assume it was the final version of FreeDB before it was shut down.  As I said, it has ceratinly inproved my 'hit' rate! :

Album databases and track labeling
News 25th March 2020
On 31st March 2020 the Freedb website - used by B2 to assign track names to CDs - will shut down. All B2 and BB1 software since 2nd February has used an alternative website - Musicbrainz.

B2 can also use an offline copy of the entire Freedb database - as it stood on 31st March - to provide candidate track names if Musicbrainz does not have a match - so you get the best of both worlds.

You can load the Freedb database using Settings->Maintenance->Get Mydb. You only need to do this once as it will not change - and its a big file 1.5G so will take many minutes (20 with my broadband) to download and unzip.

Hmmm, that's interesting.  Thanks Christian.
I wonder if someone else could enlighten us further.  If the downloadable database is the older FreeDB, does that work in conjunction with the newer online MusicBrainz database to expand the catalog - if an album is not found online at MusicBrainz, then keep looking in the downloaded DB?  Recent reports of getting hung up waiting for a response from MusicBrainz seem to indicate that that might not be working quite right.

Hi Christian,

You are correct - Get mydb - does download the last updated version of the freedb CDDB.

Hi Everyone, Some very interesting comments here.  I didn't realise that the B2 would update automatically if it was connected to the internet - which it is.  i have updated the software and that seemed to work OK.  However, i have just ripped 3 CDs.
Two of them were by Nicola Benedetti; one dated 2011 and the other issued recently and the B2 didn't recognise either of them.  it just called them by an album number. The other CD was from last month's BBC Music magazine which it recognised immediately. Anyone have any ideas why? And even more important - do I need to download adifferent database?

Hi,

The MusicBrainz database is in the public domain and for the most part is populated by users/owners of the music CDs etc so its probable that some of your albums are not found because no-one has ever uploaded them.
This also means that accuracy of the information can be compromised. I have previously found typos in track names for example.

The database is searchable at the MusicBrainz website

Searching on Nicola Benedetti will produce a list of her albums currently on the database.
Search on artist with her name and then click through to get her discography (as per Musicbrainz)

If you have access to a computer for ripping, something like DbPoweramp may find the albums as it uses multiple sources.
You can then upload the ripped files to the B2

Hi rocwal...,

The B2 doesn't update the database as such, but when online it uses the 'live' CDDB supplied by MusicBrainz. A software update was required to point the B2 to MusicBrainz rather than Freedb.

There is a section on the MusicBrainz homepage to add missing Album information.
