Importance: High

Dear Mr. Khoo/ Allie/ Jacky,

We were on site yesterday to understand the roof build up constructed on site, the testing method and the spatial area of the room understudy.

Before we proceed further on proposals and costing, we need your review on the followings :

Upon discussion with Logen (ECOWOOL Polyglass Fibre insulation supplier) and his acoustic consultant, below are the summary and proposal :

(1)    In layman terms, it is estimated that the outside noise during rainfall is about 80dB. With an STC42 build up as predicted, it should reduce the inside noise to about 38-40dB.

(2)    However on site, as mentioned by your side, the dB achieved is about 53dB upon testing with rain simulated.

(3)    The noise deviation is possibly caused by the glazed window which transmits the noise into the room – unless the glass window has the same STC value as the roof. Or alternatively, to seal up the glaze window with insulation and check the dB again.

(4)    Suggestion – since the room dB without the rain noise is 43dB and it is increased by 10dB when rain is simulated, it is suggested to increase the roof STC by proposing a roof system build up that achieve STC50 minimum to achieve the desired 45dB with the current test environment.

(5)    The right procedure to test for sound is to test the roofing decking without the insulation – check the dB and then add insulation and check the dB again.

(6)    If required to redo the test with another acoustic consultant, he would require that the room be installed with only decking to get the dB and then another unit with the complete system to get the dB.

Options :

(1)    The glass window needs to be the same value of STC as the roof

(2)    Insulate the glass window

(3)    To increase the roofing build up to achieve STC 50 minimum.

Please advise what is the next course of action required.

Cheers,

ANGELINE ONG
