Core Family Values
We all have core values, whether they are conscious or unconscious.
Through our workshops Liz and I have observed that feelings of anger
and getting angry are sometimes as a result of our children or our
partner or, our own behaviour directly opposing our core values. Let
me explain.
Values are defined as a person's principles or standards of behavior;
one's judgment of what is important in life.
Have you ever given any time to reflect on what yours are? Have you
asked your partner what theirs are? Are they the same, similar or
completely different? Could this be an area of conflict within your
family?
When thinking about my own childhood, Honesty was my fathers’ core
value. No matter what, he believed we should always tell the truth and
we did. There were a few others, but, that is the one I remember the
most and still uphold in my own family today.
If my dad ever thought my brother or I weren’t being truthful, he
would become very upset with us. It was as though we were shaking his
very foundations. We would hit a nerve. Trip his switch. Light his
fuse.
By becoming aware of our own core values, we will be able to
recognise, more easily, when they are being challenged. This may well
be a trigger to feelings of anger.
One way of ensuring that this doesn’t happen is to share those values
with our partners and our children. With this understanding and
respect, the foundations of our core family values will be firmly
laid.
Liz and I are looking to develop a workshop on this theme. If you
would be interested in attending it or would like to suggest other
themes for workshops, please email

Big love to you and your family, especially over the weekend -
