Demystifying The Role Of A Coach
For those of you who haven’t come across coaching or the information
you have, is limited, Liz has put a list of questions and answers for
you to learn more about the role of a Coach.
Question: What is coaching?
Answer: Coaching is a conversation between two people!
Question: But why would I pay to have a conversation?
Answer: The difference with coaching is that the coach consciously
directs the conversation in a way that enables the client to come to
grips with the underlying issues they are struggling with. The Coach
enables the client to define the goals that really inspire them, not
just goals they think they need to or should achieve!
Question: How does the coach do this?
Answer: Every coach is different, but here are some of the ways I work
with my clients:
1. Create a relationship with the client where they feel safe to open
up.
2. Listen to a client so they are fully understood.
3. Ask questions to get to the heart of issues.
4. Challenge the client to look at things differently.
5. Point out the clients blind spots. Identifying things they are
unaware of in terms of their thinking and/or behaviour.
6. Provide tools such as theories, models and exercises to shed light
on whatever the client is dealing with or trying to achieve.
7. Encourage clients to take action consistent with what they want to
achieve.
8. Look at thoughts, feelings or patterns that may be stopping the
client resolving issues or achieving goals.
Question: How do I (as the client) benefit from all of this?
Answer: Before I answer this, pause. Imagine you have an issue that
you’ve been unable to resolve on your own. What would it be like to
have a coach who is dedicated to listening to what you are struggling
with? Someone who will enable you to figure out the cause of the issue
and support you in its resolution. Yes it is possible!
But, to the original question of how would I benefit as a client.
There is obviously no one answer, as different clients get different
results.
Here are three testimonials from clients I have worked with recently.
JM, Information Technology and Design.
"I was referred to Liz by a close friend, I was more curious about
what a Life coach did. I was a bit skeptical about what I could
achieve in my life with the assistance of a life coach. I was very
impressed and delighted to find that I received tremendous support and
assistance from Liz. I was able to really look at different aspects of
my life and understand the values I wanted to have for myself. Liz
helped me understand my reactions to situations in my life and
assisted me in finding ways to deal with these situations. I found Liz
very supportive and thorough enjoyed the time I spent with Liz.
She opened my eyes to how I could achieve the values I wanted in my
life and how to achieve them in all areas of my life. From this
experience I now believe that nothing is impossible and it is really
about believing in you and quite often taking a risk and seeing what
the results are. I surprised myself many times on the outcome of this
task. I would recommend that everyone would benefit from a life
coach".
S.P, Personal Assistant
"I have only had five sessions with Liz as my coach, but changes in my
life have been extraordinary. For the first time, I have been able to
clearly visualize my life's direction and goals, and with this
knowledge I can make major decisions very easily. There have also been
unexpected bonuses, I find myself making healthier choices around
food, and have lost the extra half stone in weight I had put down to
the inevitable side-effects of age! I have started to enjoy walking
every day, the first exercise I have done in fifteen years. My weekly
pay packet used to mysteriously disappear after a few days with
nothing to show for it, but now I always seem to have money in my
purse and my account, with no feeling of deprivation! I am bringing a
new enthusiasm to my work place, in fact, to every area of my life.
Time is no longer the enemy, I see to be able to effortlessly do
everything I want to do, and still have time left to dream! So, watch
this space, folks, with Liz's support, anything seems possible!"
