my10th grade English class studied it at the time of the ann-margaret/ Treat Williams tv version; one of the cable channels aired the 1951 movie and we were told to watch both. our teacher pointed out that 1951 stella grabs the baby before leaving Stanley at the end; implying that this separation is permanent.
