Hi, I'm looking to update our community breastfeeding resource list.  The last version I can find is from September 2015, and I know at least some aspects of it are out of date.  Do we have any new private practice IBCLCs in town?  Devorah Bianchi and Alice Stroud are the two on the list.  Please let me know if you know of any changes or additions, and if you are interested in attending a meeting before the fair, with dates, times, and location suggestions that would work for you.  After a long break perhaps there is renewed enthusiasm for meeting again?  Thank you, Angela

Ask Debbie Jensen. She’s doing home visits.

She had the trifold at Saturday’s Baby Expo. I didn’t look to see if she updated it, but I bet she has.

Hello Angela,

La Leche League of Eugene has both a facebook page and a group where mothers can talk.  This is the page: La Leche League of Eugene, Or   THis is the group: La Leche League of Eugene/Springfield   If you can only list one, we'd prefer the group one.

Our meetings are now every third Thursday 10AM at Parenting Now, 86 Centennial Loop Eugene 97401. We post updated information on meetings on our facebook group.

Phone is correct.

Thank you for updating!

Hi Angela,

Thanks for working on the resource list!  We give it to everyone who attends the tour at Sacred Heart and talk about its value to new moms.

I know that Devorah may have changed her status since she no longer works in L&D.  She told me that she would be referring her patients to Debbie Jensen who has a new outpatient practice.

If I can help, please let me know.

I would also like to get together with the group again, as well as volunteer at the fair.

Debbie Jensen updated a version in March 2017, I thought she had passed it along – new additions were made

As more people are being added, it gets difficult to have multiple descriptions, as there just is not enough room

I have attached for all of you to review, update as the group desires

Please share if changes are made – as we all use this – it’s a great contact list for all

I would recommend trying to keep it to one page if we can

Hello all...This is Devorah Bianchi RN, IBCLC
1) I am still teaching monthly prenatal breastfeeding classes for PWC the 3rd Tuesday of every month. They are free to PWC patients and $50 per couple ( if partners cannot attend alternate support people are very strongly encouraged and welcome! )
2) I am also still doing home visits only. Please refer to my website for fees and any other details @
3) Moms are welcome to call or text 7 days a week 9am - 9pm with questions or just for some quick tips and support
Thanks,
I'd love to attend a meeting if you plan one before the fair I'm available any night other than Tuesday's 😉

Angela, I’m wondering who may have received information from the Lane County Fair regarding the Coalition’s Breastfeeding Station. I coordinated volunteers last year, and am willing to help coordinate again, but don’t want to coordinate alone. It falls on my working weekend this year. Thanks, Cathy

Dear Jana,

I have reviewed ths PDF you sent.  La Leche League should be under community support and not under in home support for a fee. We are free and only do home visits as we are able. This really varies with the Leader and her own personal schedule. If you are able to change it, I would be grateful. This might explain a recent call where the mother was expecting I'd go and do a home visit. She was so disappointed!

Thank you all for your awesome breastfeeding support.

Hi, I actually don't know anything about the breastfeeding station at the fair, perhaps somebody else on the list does.  I just thought if we tried to set a meeting before then we might get people willing to attend since there seems to be community enthusiasm for this project.  The past few years when I have scheduled meetings we have averaged 2-3 attendees.  Angela

How does everybody feel about the facebook groups included on the list?  I joined a few of them over the past few years to get a feel for things, and I wouldn't feel comfortable "recommending" some of them as good sources of breastfeeding information, and I'm afraid including them comes across as an endorsement.  I'm thinking maybe the groups/resources that have facebook groups (like LLL, Daisy CHAIN, others?) could have their groups listed with their program information instead?

Hello, I'm an admin and former admin for some of the Facebook groups that are on the list--the groups I'm involved in are Attachment Parents of Lane County and MAMA NIPLES (Moms Advocating for Moms About Nursing In Public Laws, Eugene/Springfield), peer to peer support groups that formed as alternatives to existing resources. I was also involved with HM4HB-Oregon before 'retiring' to care for my second child. Eliminating references to these may be the opposite of what I think is trying to be achieved, to provide a diverse range of support options that could meet the widest set of needs. I would suggest there are other ways to convey there is no endorsement and that a referral with an IBCLC or other qualified provider is recommended.

All the best!

I agree - it would be easy to preface the list with something like “we don’t endorse these groups.” plus I think most people know that anyone can post anything on facebook & one shouldn’t take what one reads on there as gospel truth!

Thank you, Angela, and all who contribute to this resource list. It’s hugely helpful to folks (like me) who care for newborns & their Moms.

Two questions:

1)      Does the date at the bottom of each page need to be changed (now says September 2015)?

2)      May I share this resource with my colleagues in Family Medicine & Pediatrics?  Would it be ok to pass it to the Medical Society so they can make it available as a resource to their membership? I assume that the numbers listed are for our patients to use to contact those on the list?

Again, thanks so much to all of you

Dear Angela,

Thank you for revamping this list for our community. One change that I request is for me to be personally removed from the list entirely. I am not doing IBCLC work as a private business at this time. The phone number listed here is my personal cell phone number and as such does not have a professional greeting for clients. I have no means of doing billing and I am not working as a volunteer at the moment. Thank you so much for your understanding and follow through.

Warmly,

Okay, I checked with Pacific Women's Center and they said the information currently contained here is accurate.  I removed Kirsten from this list, hopefully Debbie saw her message and can remove her from the trifold as well (that was where I got some of the additions from.)  I added Eats on Feets Oregon and Daisy's Group to the list of facebook groups, as well as a disclaimer.  How do we go about gathering which groups should be included? I would imagine a number of new parenting groups have popped up since 2014/2015. I added Eats on Feets because it seemed arbitrary to not include them when Human Milk 4 Human Babies was included.  I know people expect a wide array of responses from community members online, but one of the groups I had joined I eventually left because I fundamentally disagreed as an IBCLC with the approach to night-weaning laid out in the group description (never, at any age or for any reason, because it is "harmful" to children, and it was off the table for discussion in the group.)  It is only one group out of the list, and I did have a conversation with the admin about it a couple of years ago.  Perhaps it has since changed, or perhaps not, it was based on a personal conviction of the group's founder.  I left because I found it distressing as a maternal/child health professional seeing mothers who had serious mental health issues and preschool aged children waking every hour to nurse berated for considering discontinuing night nursing.  It felt like exactly the opposite message I would want them to receive, and staying in the group made me feel complicit.  I stopped handing out the resource list because of that experience and the fear vulnerable moms receiving it might feel it constituted an endorsement of the group's philosophy.  The impossibility of making the list of facebook groups fully inclusive and the inherent difficulty of weeding out those that send potentially damaging messages was where I was coming from when I suggested leaving them off altogether.  I certainly agree that many of them have a lot to offer, though, and defer to the larger group.

This looks really nice, Angela.

The only change I suggest is for continuity sake --- both Debbie Jensen and Cathy Rasmussen’s names be moved to the left column and each add some text of their services offered to the column on the right.

I feel compelled to clarify that the group you are referring to is Attachment Parents of Lane County. Nothing has changed, our group does not hold space for night weaning. (I am a co-founder but was not the person with whom you had a conversation.)

We have found as a group that there are ample resources supporting certain parenting practices and we offer space to those who want to pursue options that do not currently have that level of support. We strive to provide ourselves as safe a space to discuss these options as possible, without having to further process the options that have already been identified as undesired. This is why night weaning, as well as other specific topics, are off the table. We're as up front and transparent about that as possible, and we are well aware that boundaries are difficult for some. For our members, it's a relief and freeing.

Anyone with questions is encourage to contact me directly any time.

Best regards,

Hello,

While I do appreciate being included in the resource list, I am not currently working as an IBCLC and I am not set up in a professional capacity to visit people at home, or to bill them for services. I had been working for Daisy CHAIN prior to their loss of funding. Now I help out on occasion as a volunteer. Please remove my name and personal cell phone number from the flyer as I don't want to offend anyone who reaches out to me and expects a professional voice mail and rapid response.

Thank you kindly,

Kirsten Stock

Angela

I really appreciate all your work with updating these lists!
I’m a little unclear – are there two (or three?) different lists? 3-pager, 1-pager, & trifold? where & how will each of them be distributed? I’d like to make some changes to my listing in the 1-pager & trifold (add more info) but want to get clear first on what the purpose of each of the lists is.
thanks again,
alice

The "Community Breastfeeding Resources" list is one that has been managed by the coalition in the past, and since it seemed in need of updating I figured I would take it on since an outdated version was still available in the dropbox and presumably still being distributed.  I looked online to see if there was a more recent version, and found that Tammy at WIC had updated it in 2015.  She kindly emailed me a version which I am able to revise, that is the non-PDF version I posted in the hopes other people would make their own corrections and forward it back to the list. This three page document provides space for description of services provided. The impetus for me looking to see what was out there was a request from my supervisor to put together a single page of community breastfeeding resources and IBCLCs in private practice, and that is the "one pager" I put together.  It is not an "official" coalition approved document, and it is just names and phone numbers, hopefully correct contact info of people who want to be included which is why I posted it for review.  Please let me know if you want your name and phone number included or left off, but to keep it to one page additional information won't be added to that one.  I certainly don't object to those who want a concise list sharing it after it has been reviewed for accuracy. The trifold was posted in this thread, and it was not something I had seen before, but apparently it is being managed by Debbie Jensen.  Since it is also in need of revising and carries the breastfeeding coalition logo on the back I gave it it's own thread, assuming there would be others who hadn't seen it either and might have input.  I don't purport to be in charge of anything, I just saw a need and thought if I was compiling an up-to-date list for my own purposes I should update the "official" list at the same time. Two years ago when Kathryn stepped down from leading I was one of four people recruited to a position for the following year (which has expired.)  My responsibility was securing locations for quarterly meetings, which I did, but only a couple of people attended.  I'm happy to schedule another meeting if at least five people would like to attend one and indicate dates and times that work, but there doesn't seem to be much interest for that aspect of my initial post.  If somebody knows how to add the final updated versions to the dropbox and wants to volunteer that seems the best way to distribute them, otherwise I will just attach the version I am working on to it's own post when it is complete, and perhaps Debbie will do likewise.

thanks much for clarifying all this! on the one-page list, it seems like there would easily be room for a short description after the name & phone number (still keeping within the one line). if that would be ok, I would like to update my listing to something like: Alice Stroud, IBCLC, MA, LMT, craniosacral therapist. home visits on a donation basis. 541-431-1663 or 541-206-7282.

Thank you very much, Angela! You have done great work with this list!  I hope to be back up on the list someday in the future but for now this is best. I can let Debbie know. With regard to the social media support groups, my experience has been the same as yours and I am in agreement with not promoting or advertising these groups before I am aware of what a Mom's values and parenting goals are. Without trying to, these groups can lend themselves to being very exclusive communities and that is helpful for some and detrimental to others.

Many thanks for your time and energies spent in coordinating this information for the public!

Sincerely,
Kirsten Stock

The new one pager looks fantastic! Now I ask your opinion about what the LLL section says. Upon reflection, I am reluctant to post monthly meeting info because sometimes we move to a different day, time and place. Would it be OK just to say : "Check facebook or call for date, time and location of monthly meetings"?

Gratefully,

Sue

Thanks for all the great input!  I think it's *almost* there, I'm hoping to have the three page version wrapped up today (everything but service descriptions for Abreast Lactation and Best Beginnings Infant Feeding Support), and Debbie will be updating the trifold when time permits.  I think the single page format tends to be more user friendly to distribute to families (although some may appreciate the long form as well), and the extended version is a great resource for providers.  I really appreciate everybody's help (and boy do I miss Katherine Gallagher and all the work she did for so long on behalf of Lane County families!).  I'm posting two versions, one with Facebook groups listed and one without as that seemed the best way to solve the "social media" dilemma.  The single page titled "updated 2017 Breastfeeding Support in Lane County" is NOT an official Breastfeeding Coalition document, but it is being included to ensure all the information contained is accurate.  Please let me know if there are further corrections needed.  Sue, I hope including the regular LLL meeting time/place with the notation to confirm is appropriate?  If you prefer different wording please let me know (there's plenty of room on the 3 pager, less on the single page but I thought you might prefer the usual time/place still be included in case it encourages more people to attend.  If you want it excluded entirely I'm happy to oblige!).  Angela
