Alias and non-Alias modelers can use Alias Assemblies and Flow Production Tracking to collaborate across teams and manage and review design projects. Flow Production Tracking also powers up Alias with automations, allowing faster design iterations.

Your Alias subscription gives you access to install and use the three previous versions. Available downloads are listed in your Autodesk Account after subscribing. See also previous releases available for subscribers.

I am looking to get specific information on the differences between Alias Design and Alias Surface relative to surface modeling. I do not care about the sketching portion or the reverse engineering meshes. But I do care about specifics to surface modeling and surface analysis. While I am not shooting for class A models, I'd like to keep my designs as light/clean as possible and have as much functionality as possible to be able to execute the design intent.

I cannot seem to find this information anywhere. My local Resellers have no idea. No one seems to actually sell or use Alias, just Inventor, AudoCad, etc. I tried Autodesk chat and customer service by phone and they direct me to resellers. I literally had to spell out A.L.I.A.S to the person -support...They didn't even recognize the name of their own product. Why is Alias so Illusive? Is it because it is mainly used in the giant auto industry and there are simply so few users in the product development world? I feel as if they are trying Not to sell this product. If the software can be purchased on the Autodesk website directly, there should be the appropriate Customer Service in place to get this information. I should not have to post this on a community forum.

This is absolutely no help at all. "Compelling Output", "Reliable Data Exchange"...Really?? What does that even mean? There is a $15k price difference between Design and Surface and this is all the information provided? So frustrating. This is seriously having me second guess investing in this software.

Is there any one out there who as actually used both Design and Surface that can help here? Do you get all of the same surfacing tools in Design as Surface but just loose g3 and up continuity? Is there a spreadsheet/matrix out there that give more detail on the differences? What specific functionality is missing from Alias Design that is in Surface specific to surface modeling and surface Analysis? Are the align and blend tools the same?

Auto Studio is unfortunately not an option due to its cost, in fact Surface really isnt either for me at least at this point...I am still a novice and I'd need to justify the expense. I have taken a few classes on Alias but we were using the Surface version. Now that I am looking to purchase a copy for myself, I am hoping I can get the functionality I need from Design.

As you mentioned I think the best route at this point is to try out a trial version of Design to insure it has the tools I need. I was just hoping somewhere out there would be an official list from Autodesk stating the specific differences. This would really help clarify things. It would also help comparing to Rhino a lot easier.

Actually you right! somehow I can see to purchase Alias Surface either, but I can see it on download on Autodesk webpage.

Anyway, I do have Alias Automotive 2014 at work. But I personally use very little the most exotic tools which differenciate from Alias Design.
I use quite a lot mesh tools due to reverse engineering.

But in the end I can say that you should be able to design pretty much anything even with Alias Design. As when I started using Alias it used to be wavefront still and Alias wasn't that level yet.

Glad it helps, happy modelling...

I have most of my experience on Alias Surface and would like to continue to learn more about that, but I don't see that as a choice to download. Should I be downloading Auto Studio or Design? Which is closer to Surface?

Alias Design includes rendering, animation and sketching. Although it can create highest quality surfaces, Design does not include some of diagnostic shaders that Surface and AutoStudio has, such as Curvature and Draft analysis. Also, frustratingly, it doesn't have the dynamic sectioning tool which allows you to do cutaway views, tremendously useful in design reviews. Even Rhino has that. Come on Autodesk! Haha.

The comparison chart that aqhead refers to does still include Surface as an option. If you click on the buy button, you can see Surface is available as a sebscription service too. They did change the name of Automotive back to AutoStudio as indicated though.

Note that the included VRED Design isn't the highest end version which is VRED Professional that actually renders the NURBS surfaces not a polygonized interpretation, among other things. If you know you need this type of rendering see the differences between the versions at:

Autodesk Alias Design is a 3D design software for industrial designers and design engineers. It is one of the premiere CAD programs for automotive designers. The software empowers a creative process with a range of sketching, modeling, surfacing, and visualization. Designers can create designs with tools tailored for industrial design, automotive design, and technical surfacing. Get the advanced capabilities you needed, from initial concept sketch to the development of production-ready Class-A surfaces. Participants in this course will learn about Alias Design & surface modeling, then discuss general and often more advanced modeling approaches relating specifically to Alias Design.

Hello, my name is Raymundo Burgueno, as many of you know, I make videos and articles to help people in their journey into 3D Design. This has given me a lot of exposure to many different people who email me, comment on my videos and send me messages asking for help. This letter is not meant to criticize Autodesk but help give a clearer picture of what the market has been telling me. I openly encourage comments that agree or disagree with this letter.

"But due to Autodesks greedy pricing policies, the tool is only available in the more expensive versions of Alias. Same with explicit control, which without it pretty much almost defeats the entire purpose of using Alias... :(" - YouTuber

In an effort to lower my cost, I decided to try out Alias Design. It is completely unusable to my class A style of modeling. Their is no way to get professional results with such a limited set of tools. Most of my videos are useless to those who need it the most.

So let's say you are a person who really wants to start modeling and maybe even eventually land a job using Alias. You aren't going to school and you don't have much disposable income. 320 dollars is extremely expensive but you try out the design version. You go online and you realize 95 percent of the educational videos use tools that aren't available to you. Schools cost 150,000 + dollars to attend. You feel cheated but more importantly you feel like theirs no path you can afford. You can't just work hard enough to achieve your dreams, you aren't rich enough for car design. It's an extremely sad reality that I read about on a weekly basis. It was my reality not too long ago.
