LosslessCut aims to be the ultimate cross platform FFmpeg GUI for extremely fast and lossless operations on video, audio, subtitle and other related media files. The main feature is lossless trimming and cutting of video and audio files, which is great for saving space by rough-cutting your large video files taken from a video camera, GoPro, drone, etc. It lets you quickly extract the good parts from your videos and discard many gigabytes of data without doing a slow re-encode and thereby losing quality. Or you can add a music or subtitle track to your video without needing to encode. Everything is extremely fast because it does an almost direct data copy, fueled by the awesome FFmpeg which does all the grunt work.

Does anyone have Windows software recommendations for editing out the commercials in the MP4 files that Channels DVR records? I don't need a whole editing suite, just something simple. Hopefully one that doesn't need to re-encode.

There is Avidemux that can be used to cut without re-encoding. However, it can only cut on key frames so you cannot cut precisely on the frame that you want.
If the video recording that you are cutting happens to have key frames in the right places, this will work fine.
It's free so you have nothing to lose by trying it.

By the way, to be exact, Channels DVR produces files with the mpg extension, not mp4. Different container.
It records the video streams as is without any type of processing and most of the providers use the H.264 codec to encode their videos. This is what you will find in Channels DVR's mpg files.

Thank you for mentioning LosslessCut. I looked at it at some point but now I see that they apparently implemented smart cut that re-encodes only the frames between key frames, just like VideoRedo does. Very interesting. I will give it another look.

I use MKVtoolnix and manually trim by time codes. This more tedious but I have never found any of those automated based programs that auto find and remove commercials to be accurate and reliable enough to use every time

Thanks for mentioning losslesscut - I have been using Avidemux so I can get used to it in case Videoredo fully disappears at some point. I have gotten used to Avidmux but always love to try other products for comparison. I'd never heard of this one before.

I normally use lossless cut, but MCEBuddy also will use an EDL file (if it is present in the same directory as the video file) and it supports a watch folder. So, for automated editing, it works well. Of course, it is Windows only, so I have to run it remotely. But, it works fairly well, if slowly.

I've been using Avidemux, but find that I am losing subtitles when I edit the .mpg file. The editing function in Channels is not accurate enough for me. Does anyone know of a Windows editing solution that doesn't cause the loss of embedded subtitles?

EDIT: Nevermind - I just Googled this and it looks like Avidemux doesn't keep them. I guess you could remove them with MKVToolnix (or whatever it's called) to extract them and then put them back after cutting the commercials. That seems like a lot of work though

If just need to crop Audio/Video from a longer track, what can I use? I tried OpenShot, but I find the export video slow, perhaps its compling all the "layers" into a new movie? Perhaps I just need a simple "crop" tool for audio/video will surfice?

kdenlive is (in my experience) the easiest software which will allow you to perform that task in a few steps and without problems. Even so, the OpenShot Video Editor project is also useful but it yet needs lots of hard work to get closer to the kdenlive.

For quickly cutting I have used MythTV. I recorded some show, let it automatically search for the commercial breaks and fine-tuned the found markers. After this I started the Myth archiving function and burned all to DVD, without the commercials.

If you want a GUI application you can use dmMediaConverter, a ffmpeg frontend, which has a split function, without reencoding, fast. Just add the split points and press Run. Also, it can do a lot of other stuff.

Note that ffmpeg will only split on keyframes. This usually works well enough for most cases, but if you need precise video segments, see How to extract time-accurate video segments with ffmpeg?. You can force all the needed keyframes before segmenting.

I've struggled with this same issue, having a large video file that I want to cut and save as separate scenes. After trying to do this in the usual suspects all listed by others here I ended up using Kino.

You will have to import the file as Kino needs it in dv format (whatever that is) and you can then specify start and end point for each clip on the Edit tab, then export each clip individually on the Export tab. Works great and is fast, the slowest part is the initial import of the video file. You can even add effects like titles to each clip.

I found that it is hard to find the exact spot to cut the scene in Kino and when I play the vid in the built in player there is no sound (there is when exported) and it plays too fast so I play the video in avidemux, find the time or frame number where I want to cut it, then use this info in Kino.

If you want to support my continued work on LosslessCut, and you want the advantage of a secure and simple installation process with automatic, stable updates, consider getting it from your favorite store:

If you want to test the very latest and greatest bleeding-edge version. 1. Go to Actions, 2. click on the latest Build/release, 3. scroll all the way down to Artifacts. Note: these builds may be totally broken!

Codecs and formats not listed above can still be converted to a supported format/codec from the File menu. (Try the fastest option first.) A low quality version of the file (with/without audio) will then be created and opened in the player. The actual cut/export operation will still be performed on the original file, so it will be lossless. This allows for potentially opening any file that FFmpeg is able to decode.
