The series, which concluded its ten-episode run recently, has been celebrated as one of the best shows of 2024, praised for its excellent acting and meticulous attention to detail. Despite being filmed entirely in Vancouver, Canada, the set design and authenticity are remarkable, thanks to a talented team of set designers and VFX specialists who collaborated with historians and Japanese experts to ensure cultural and historical accuracy.

Usuki Castle, built in 1562 and pivotal in the town's history, endured numerous power struggles and wars over the ensuing years. Despite changing hands among various clans and warlords, some remnants of the castle still stand today. As referenced in Clavell's novel and the 'Shogun' series adaptation, the complex had a strong Christian influence for a time, with records by Portuguese missionary Luis Frois relating that there were many Christian facilities built near the castle and even a chapel within the castle itself.

Very little of the original castle remains at its site, high on a hill overlooking Lake Biwa in Shiga prefecture, but a reproduction of the keep can be taken in at Ise Sengoku Village, a samurai theme park near Ise.

Edo, initially a small fishing town, transformed dramatically under the governance of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was given the area during his rivalry with the Taiko amidst Japan's power struggles. Tasked with establishing a new stronghold after failing to defeat the Taiko, Ieyasu converted Edo from a swampy region into a burgeoning city (which later became present-day Tokyo).

The Japanese samurai were arguably the best pre-gunpowder warriors since the Roman legions. Emerging in the 12th century, the samurai were a warrior caste sworn to follow the code of Bushido, which held bravery, honor, and loyalty above life itself. Samurai typically carried two swords, the single-edged katana and the shorter wakizashi, the latter used in the "seppuku" (suicide) ritual. These swords were far superior to the equivalent Western longswords, the Japanese weapons-makers having mastered the art of combining high- and low-carbon steel. Some also carried bow or spear, and later, firearms. Depending upon the era (and the samurai's wealth and status) a samurai might wear padded cloth, lacquered, or metal armor.

Japanese culture is rich in unique tradition and heritage, and the ancient world of its highly revered samurai warriors have been depicted on-screen plenty of times. But how much do you really know about the world of this intriguing military class?

The Samurai, which means servant, [1] were the highest rank in the Rokugani social system, as decreed by the Celestial Order. The Samural were the warriors of Rokugan, as well as its nobles and rulers. [2]

The word "samurai" means "those who serve", and was was first used by Emperor Hantei in reference to the Seven Thunders before the Day of Thunder. [1] All who were born in this caste were considered samurai, regardless of their occupation. Female samurai were referred to as samurai-ko. [3]

Only samurai were allowed to wear the daisho, a symbol of their office. The daisho consisted of a set of two blades, a wakizashi and a katana, tucked into an obi. Only true samurai would carry such weapons, and any individual caught carrying or touching a daisho without permission would be executed. [2]

All samurai were entitled to a trial if they were brought up on any charges by another samurai. Charges brought against a samurai from a lower caste were generally ignored unless the samurai wished to acknowledge them. This did not mean that a samurai was always immune to punishment. Killing another lord's farmer would harm that lord's income, and the samurai had in a way commited a crime against that lord, and would probably have to face justice. A samurai who stole an apple from a peasant however, was unlikely to recieve any punishment. [2]
