Technology Management Unit reviews plans for building safety systems and modifications (variances) to the New York City Fire Code or Rules in order to increase fire operations functionality, decrease fire hazards and improve life safety.
Residential dwellings with three or more rental units located in the Town of Newton should contact the New Jersey Bureau of Housing Inspection (609) 633-6241 for information regarding fire inspections.
This undergraduate certificate is designed to provide a strong background for students interested in studying fire or working in natural resources on fire management and general land management issues.
To receive an undergraduate certificate (at least 15 units) at Northern Arizona University, you must complete a planned group of courses from one or more subject matter areas with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0.
Please be aware that federal financial aid is not available for some certificates if the certificate is pursued and completed as a stand-alone certificate (i.e., not completed concurrently with a degree program). See the "Details" tab for additional information.
Purpose Statement
This undergraduate certificate is designed to provide a strong background for students interested in studying fire or working in natural resources on fire management and general land management issues.
The content studied includes the basics physical and chemical properties of fire, fire effects on ecosystems, management issues surrounding wildland fire, fire behavior modeling and monitoring and the interaction of climate, fire regimes and management. Skills developed include developing and implementing a monitoring program related to fire effects, the use of several different fire behavior and fire effects models, writing a fuels specialist report and a fire monitoring plan. Completion of this certificate with the Forestry B.S. degree meets the academic qualifications for the Fire Ecologist Certification through the Association for Fire Ecology.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this certificate, students will have:
This certificate provides a comprehensive foundation in fire ecology and management with an emphasis on practical, experiential learning grounded in current research that encompasses the many dimensions of wildland fire worldwide. Directed electives provide for additional focus in both ecological and communications areas.
Students or non-degree-seeking professionals with academic and/or professional background in natural resources, natural resource management, or allied fields sufficient to provide experience and/or context for the certificate coursework, as determined by the undergraduate coordinator.
As only the third set of graduate programs in FPE in the United States and the first one to be located on the West Coast, one goal of this program is to help fill the increasing demand for fire protection engineers, particularly in California and other western states, where the lack of educational programs in FPE has resulted in a shortag.
For admission as a classified graduate student, an applicant should hold a bachelor's degree in engineering, fire science, fire protection and safety, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution, college, or university. An undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 is required. On occasion, where other credentials are exceptionally strong, a GPA in the 2.5-3.0 range may be accepted.
Courses taken to satisfy the requirements of a graduate certificate program may be applied to the requirements of a graduate degree program; however, students must apply separately for admission into a graduate degree program. No coursework for the certificate may be below the 400 level. One 4-unit course in transfer credit may be allowed as determined by the graduate certificate program advisor.
A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for successful completion of a graduate certificate program. Students may not elect to take courses required for the certificate as credit/no credit. A graduate certificate program must be completed within three years.
Fire and Life Safety (FLS) Director is required in any commercial building requiring Comprehensive Fire Safety and Emergency Action Plan or the buildings previously requiring Fire Safety Directors. In general, any building classified as a high-rise office building, hotel or buildings that have voluntarily installed fire alarm systems with two-way voice communication systems must have a Fire and Life Safety Director on premises during regular business hours.
The FLS Director and Deputy FLS Director must hold a valid Certificate of Fitness and is responsible to implement the FDNY plan (e.g. Comprehensive Fire Safety and Emergency Action Plan or Fire Safety and Evacuation Plan), to conduct FLS staff training, fire and non-fire emergency drills and other duties indicated in the Fire Code and Fire Rule.
Most modern fire and gas design techniques are considered unsatisfactory due to their rule-of-thumb and experience-oriented nature, without any real means to quantify risk. But the technical report ISA-TR84.00.07-2018, Guidance on the Evaluation of Fire, Combustible Gas, and Toxic Gas System Effectiveness lays out a comprehensive framework for performance-based fire and gas design.
The program is ideal for control systems engineers, fire and gas system specialists, process safety professionals, engineering management professionals, facility engineers, industrial hygiene professionals, and many others.

California State Fire Training (SFT) is the OSFM division that establishes, develops, and delivers standardized training and education for the California fire service. The State Fire Training website serves as a valuable resource and a one-stop-shop for all things related to the State Fire Training. Check this website regularly as content is updated periodically or follow us on social media.
This certificate is designed to incorporate the theory and applications necessary to become a credentialed Fire Officer. Students who complete SPC's Certificate program in Fire Officer Supervisor will have completed courses in preparation for the Certificate of Competency test for Fire Officer I through the Florida State Fire College. Additional requirements outside of this certificate are required for Fire Officer I certification and details are available on the Florida Fire Board of Standards Training website (url: ). These courses also apply towards the Public Safety Associate in Science (EAM-AS) degree, Fire Science Subplan.
All commercial businesses within Gwinnett County, including those within city limits, must have a certificate of occupancy issued by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Businesses within the city limits of Loganville are an exception because Loganville has its own fire department, and issues certificates of occupancy within the city.
Owners, tenants, their agents, or designees of all buildings, tenant spaces, and commercial sites, are required to submit plans and specifications of the project to Fire Plan Review, prior to obtaining the required fire permits.
A final inspection and certificate of occupancy, for each business establishment, must be obtained from the Office of the Fire Marshal before occupying any building covered by article FPP-2012 Sec. 42-36 or conducting business.
When the project involves construction or renovation, construction documents shall be submitted online or in one or more sets with each permit application. Construction documents must be of sufficient clarity and detail to indicate the location, nature, and extent of the work proposed and show that the work conforms to the provisions of the fire code.
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Fire Plan Review will collect fees as established in the Gwinnett County Land Development and Other Services Fee Schedule as may be amended for construction permits, certificates of occupancy, and other fire-related permits, plan reviews, revisions, variances, certificates, and re-inspections.
Students will develop entry-level expertise in the areas of fire suppression, fire prevention, training and administration. Opportunities also exist with private industry safety programs, insurance companies, and fire equipment manufacturing firms.
The Fire Technology field offers enhanced opportunities for employment to students who have completed CSM's program. Through the expertise of the faculty and the exposure to professional fire service personnel, students can expect to be trained in the latest theories and techniques of fire technology, firefighting skills, and emergency medical training.
Students who wish to concentrate on meeting the basic requirements for entry-level employment are advised to complete the EMT and Fire Academy courses. Fire agencies in California require completion of this training to meet minimum requirements for employment as a firefighter. However, many agencies are beginning to require an Associate degree for entry-level positions.
