Howdy!

My name is Ryan Shanley and I the Public Relations officer for Omega
Phi Alpha, a national service sorority on campus. This semester as one
of our projects we are hosting an art show to showcase local talent on
campus and from juniors and seniors in high school. We are catering to
juniors and seniors to give them a jump start for school. The first
hour of the show will be open to only professors and this will give an
opportunity for students to discuss future academic options.

The idea behind the show is to give artistic students, in an art major
or not, an outlet to show off their work. Then at the show, each item
will be sold and prints for those interested will be available to sign
up for.

During these next few weeks we will be heavily advertising the event
on campus with flyers and table sign ups. We are also talking to the
art departments at local high schools. If anyone has an connections
that they think might be helpful for us, please see my information
below and don't hesitate to contact me!

This list serve was the only art related area for the community I
could find, but if you know anyone that you feel would be great for
this opportunity, please pass this message along and I will keep this
page up to date with more specific details as the event gets closer!

Thanks and gig 'em,

Ryan Shanley

Hey Nicolas,

You not being in school isn't a problem, here is my concern though...We designed the show to be put on by students for students so that everything would ultimately be inexpensive at the show. Students want to make money and they know that students don't have a lot to spend so everything would be priced inexpensively...

You are more than welcome to showcase your art and we can have you in a section so you can bring multiple pieces, but I am not sure how you price your gallery and I just want to let you know before you go through a big hassle that (only trying to be honest) if you have expensive pieces you might not sell anything. Of course professors are allowed to buy pieces so that opportunity could be great for you! I just want to be up front so you know what's going on.

Let me know and I am more than happy to sign you up!
T-shirt designs come out next week and I will be putting that on the list serve. Let me know if you would be interested in ordering one!

Thanks,

Ryan

Ryan,
i usually just give my paintings away to friends.i mean a little money would be nice, but i wouldnt expect much, i had quite a few for sale at revolution bar for a while bur i think she lost a few so i took them all back. cant afford a t shirt, im a jobless bum at the moment. But this sounds like a really cool idea. i was selling the ones i had at revolution anywhere25 bucks to 50, but those were big prints, most of my stiff i have done in the asutin state mental hospital as of late, so they are small and i woulndt charge much at all, what were the dates again and time?
thanks for the quick response.

Ryan,
Do you think that your group might be interested in working with another
art project?
Take a look at http://www.sketchcrawl.com , the World Wide Sketch Crawl
website.
I feel like this is something that a lot of people in our area would like to
do, but I haven't had much luck in getting the word out to students,
especially. I tried to get it on a newsletter from A&M, but they said I
needed a connection to A&M.
I think it is such a great idea and we should be doing this here.
The event is the World Wide Sketch Crawl. On Saturday November 21,
they will be celebrating their 5th Anniversary with the 25th World Wide
Sketch Crawl. It would be so great if we could get a large group here to
participate.
It's Free! And open to everyone-all ages, all media, all skill levels,
groups, families, or individuals. People can work as a group or solo, all
day, or just a few minutes. There are no rules.
The idea is for everyone, all over the world, on the same day, to draw
or journal their surroundings. At the end of the day, they can share
experiences and their work, possibly by getting together somewhere, or by
adding them to the Sketch Crawl website, sites like Flickr or Picassa, or
their own blogs or websites.
It's very interesting to see what people in other places did during
their day of sketching. Previously, they have had over 50 countries
participating,
Participants can sketch, draw, paint, journal, or even doodle.
They just need to bring themselves, their materials-pencil, paper, a
sketchbook, or whatever they want to use, and any personal items they might
want to use such as a hat, folding stool, camera, money for a drink or food,
etc.
I have registered for Bryan/College Station/Calvert/The Brazos Valley
Area on their Forum on the website.
I am open to suggestions as to the place, however.
I learned about Sketch Crawl from the Rockport Arts Center in Rockport,
Texas. It seemed like such a good idea, that my sister and I have been
doing them for over a year. Last time, we met in downtown Bryan at the
LaSalle Hotel coffee shop. A couple from the Lake Houston area joined me.
We went across the street to the Carnegie Library Garden, and spent the
morning sketching. Then we went to Rudy's for lunch and sketched there for
a while in the afternoon before they had to leave.
Previously, we have also sketched in downtown Bryan and in Calvert. I
have even just done the Sketch Crawl on a country road out of Bryan.
You can see the work on Flickr, the Sketch Crawl website, and my blog at
http://cecelia-throughmyeyes.blogspot.com/ .I also have set up a Facebook
group called Brazos Valley Sketchers, and another with the same name on
Yahoo, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BrazosValley_Sketchers.
We started out at the LaSalle Hotel, and Greta Watkins at the Frame
Gallery in downtown Bryan, agreed to be a contact person and we could
register at her shop, just to get an idea of who was sketching.
The merchants in downtown Bryan would be happy for us to sketch there.
We also can sketch in Calvert, and Sonny Moss at Mud Creek Pottery on
Main Street is a contact person there.
Of course, we are not limited to those places.
My idea is to have people in all the area communities, participate. Or
to go around to different places during different crawls.
This all started 5 years ago as a graphic artist, Enrico Casarosas, in
San Francisco went on a Pub Crawl for a friend who was getting married. He
had his sketch book with him and drew during the evening. He liked that
idea so went out on his own to sketch the area around him one day. Then he
invited friends to join him and they decided to invite people all over the
world to all get out and draw their surroundings on the same day. And it
has grown. The largest group seems to be in Buenos Aires, followed by San
Francisco.
I have notified the Brazos Valley Art League, the Arts Council of Brazos
Valley, KAMU, the Eagle and KBTX, and area newspapers.
I am a retired art teacher, so, of course, I am all for art events like
this.
I also like the idea of your art show for students. If you will send me
your information, I will add it to my blog and to the Brazos Valley
Sketchers sites.
I have a flyer for the Sketch Crawl that I can send you, but I haven't
put a place on it, yet, hoping I can get some input. The next Sketch Crawl
is on the same day as the Baylor game, and I'm toying with the idea of going
to the game and doing at least part of my sketching there. Not sure about
going, yet, but that is one idea.
Let me know what you think.
