I started this group long ago to keep myself and others abreast with
what's going on, and for some reason I don't always get notified of
pending "memberships." Please bear in mind that this is meant to be a
community list to which anyone can post.

I'd like to remind folks of the very good resource that KAMU's
"KAMUnity Calendar" is:
http://events.publicbroadcasting.net/kamu/events.eventsmain

The site above is pretty heavy on the front side, for which this
simplified rendition was created:
http://fingertrips.com/a
It's especially useful via mobile when you're on the go.

The convention center has a fair amount of activity posted, though
there's a lot to sift through to get to the good stuff:
http://www.visitaggieland.com/Event.aspx

For the past year, the Downtown Bryan website has been kept up to
date:
http://www.downtownbryan.com/activities_events.shtml
In particular, I'd like to point out the [annual/semiannual?] Art Step
on Nov 7. Definitely make plans to check it out. First Fridays are a
good time occurring monthly as well.

Hope this little ping gets somewhere.. The driving motivation behind
this list is to share what wonderful activities/events occur here,
and, time permitting, I still have ideas to deploy a "master events
calendar" comprised of events from all the local calendars one can
find (the above, kbtx.com, abc40.com, etc). One day... one day...

Something for the calendar:

Luigi's Patio Ristorante - live jazz every Fri and Sat night, from a
rotating pool of players.
Key players in the band are members of the family that owns and runs the
restaurant. Duilio Tani plays jazz clarinet and is the owner (and
architect who did the interior design of the cafe). Pablo Tani plays
tenor sax and manages the business, and Santiago Tani works as a waiter
and greeter and plays the drums. Many of the guest musicians come from
Sam Houston where they are faculty and students in the music program,
some of the players are locals and there are occasional special guests
from around the area. Typically the early sets are restrained "lounge
jazz" but as the evening goes on the band starts stretching out and
playing longer jams and "real jazz" in the style of Miles Davis and John
Coltrane.

I play there a few times a month, usually on piano but sometimes on bass.

Here are some live recordings from shows featuring special guests.

featuring Paul Hollis and Matt Bowers from Austin-based Java Jazz
http://www.karlrehnmusic.com/LuigiJam/3-1-08/luigijam.html - featuring
Houston area "smooth jazz" sax master Brian Best

Thanks Karl-- you're absolutely right!  Luigi's is a gem in our community, and who can argue with smoke-free, Great, free jazz every weekend!

You mentioned the design of the interior, here are some early pics:
http://bronius.blogspot.com/2007/08/luigis-patio-ristorante-awesome-italian.html
The owner's concept was an "interior" section for "home style" dining as well as an exterior "patio" (all enclosed and embraced by the a/c) of the Italian village where friends and family gather to socialize the evening through.  He's really brought together a real transportation overseas, and it's just a short trip from your front doorstep.

Thanks for all the web sites.  I've bookmarked some of them.  We like to try new restaurants and love art, so this is a big help.

Nicholas-
Try to hook up with Art Step in some fashion.. You might want to look into large poster prints for distribution at public art fests like this one.

The most common thing I've seen is that artists will work deals with
restaurants to hang their art (with price tags) up for 30-60 days. The
restaurant would get some cash out of any pieces sold while being shown
at their place of business.

The other thing I've seen is artists running booths at the various
outdoor festivals that happen around the area. Austin has 1-2 a month
from small to large, I'm sure there are events like that in Houston too.
http://www.austinchronicle.com is a good place to browse for upcoming
events like that in Austin.

Some artists hang their work in the lobby of The Theatre Company via some program with the Arts Council.  You might check with Padrick there at the AC to see how all that goes down,

You might also want to network with organizations like the Brazos Valley Art League.  They have meetings, shows, etc. and their members are asked to show work in different places.
There are organizations in Houston, Austin, etc.  but a little more expensive to get to, considering the cost of gas these days.
Also get in with some of the people in the Architecture Dept. at A&M  and Blinn.  Some of the teachers/profs do show their work.  I think that Houston and other places are more favored than locally, especially for abstract.
There is also the Society of Childen's Bookwriters and Illustrators, with a branch here, Brazos Valley SCBWI, and Brazos Writers, if you like to write at all.
Look for a gallery that would be interested in representing you.  You can find some of those by going out and looking, and by networking with other artists.  And, also look at blogs and websites of artists-especially those that have a similar style.
Start a blog.  That's free.
You might try to show at some of the festivals and fairs in this area, to get exposure.  Sales are not always that great, but people do look and may come back later.
Check out and talk to artists in this area who are making it.  Selling their work, etc.  They found a niche and are filling it, enjoying some success in that way.  Take note of what has worked for them, and what didn't work.  They may be nice and willing to talk to you!
A lot of artists do something other than art, like teach, have a gallery, do workshops, design t-shirts, do portraits, even animal portraits, to pay their bills.  And then they do what they love on the side.
It is a long, hard climb, but possible.
Martha Marshall, Linda Blondheim, Russell Baker, Virginia Vaughan, Myrna Wacknov, and Nancy Standlee are just few of the artists whose blogs I read, and who have some good advice.  I have a list of Artist and Authors, Artists' blogs, etc. on my own blog that you might check out.
One word of caution, and Martha wrote about this the past few days on her blog, be careful about leaving your work on display in offices, etc.  You should have a good contract.  Sometimes, artists leave some work in an office to display or for a possible sale, and then the office, or gallery, closes with no sign of the owner, or your work.  You might not have any problem, but, then again, you may get your work back years later, damaged, or never .
Good luck!
Cecelia

Here are some activities that some of you might enjoy or might participate
in.

Victorian Tea, Gala, and Street Fair

They were looking for vendors with a Victorian appropriate theme. I'm not
sure if that is closed yet, or not. Jody Powers at Zamykal Kolache Shop on

20th World Wide Sketch Crawl
Saturday October 25
FREE

Let's Draw The Brazos Valley!
This event was started about 4 years ago by an artist in San Francisco. The
idea is for everyone, all over the world, to go out and draw their
surroundings, all on the same day.
It is for all ages, all levels, beginniner to professional, children to
adults, groups or individuals, all day or just for a few minutes. There are
no rules.
I have registered for Bryan/College Station and the Brazos Valley, so, if
anyone wants to join in, we would be glad to have you. Or, if you prefer,
you can work by yourself. It helps if you register, though, so we have some
idea of how many people participated. A few of us participated with the
last two Sketch Crawls in March and June. They are held about every 3
months.
I hope that we can get a contact person in each community of the Brazos
Valley, so that we can record our area and participate.
After the event, sketches and experiences can be posted on the website, your
own website or blog, or places like Flickr.
In Bryan, we meet at Greta Watkins' the Frame Gallery downtown to register.
Then, we might gather at the LaSalle Hotel, an easy place to find, and a
place to get coffee. The morning is spent sketching, either as a group, or
individually. So far, we haven't made it past lunch, though. It was just
too hot outside in July. But the idea is to work more after lunch, then meet
back at the Frame Gallery to share experiences and work. Then post our
results online.
Sonny Moss at Mud Creek Pottery is a contact person for Calvert. The
schedule there is about the same as for Bryan. Meet at his gallery and
studio, breakfast at Zamykal Kolache Shop, spend the morning sketching.
Lunch. Sketch in the afternoon. Meet back at Mud Creek Pottery to share
experiences and work. Then post those things on the Sketch Crawl website.
I'm hoping that we can get some people at Blinn and A&M, in the schools, and
in the various communities of the Brazos Valley involved. If you are
interested, you can send an e-mail to grann...@yahoo.com .
So, spread the word.

The Brazos Valley Art League will take entries for their Fall Juried Show on

up December 1.

Hey BVC singers,
I realize this is an unusual question, but does anyone know of any good acupuncturist/natural health practitioners here? I have some weird health stuff going on and am thinking it would be good to try something along that vein. Thanks!

Lorna-
Just to be clear, this is the arts/culture list, not the BVChorale list..

That said, I think anyone at Brazos Natural Foods could point you somewhere.  I think that Peter and Amy Minke run some sort of holistic health sessions and distribute natural products as well.  Incidentally, Peter Minke sings with BVC, so you might see him tonight at rehearsal (if he's back in town).

Reminder:
Everyone who likes to draw, sketch, paint, doodle, or journal is invited
to join in the 21st World Wide Sketch Crawl Saturday January 10.
http://www.sketchcrawl.com
This is open to all ages, all skill levels, all media, families, groups,
or individuals. You can work in one spot as a group, work solo, move around
to different places, start early or late, work at home, or work all day or
just a few minutes, depending on your schedule and interests.
The idea is for people to draw their surroundings, all over the world,
all on the same day.
It is FREE! And there are no hard and fast rules. This time, they do
have a t-shirt, available on their website. But it isn't required.
Just bring along your sketching/painting/or writing materials and any
personal items you may want-like a chair or stool.
You can register, for free, on the Sketch Crawl website to post messages,
start a group, and post your work and experiences afterward.
In Bryan, meet downtown at the LaSalle Hotel, beginning about 8:30 a.m.
After 10:00 a.m., participants may register at the Frame Gallery, just to
get an idea of who is working, how many, and where. The day will be spent
sketching and end with returning to the Frame Gallery to share our work and
experiences. Later, these may be added to the Sketch Crawl website under
Forums, on places like Flickr or Picassa, or on individual websites or
blogs.
If the weather is bad, we can move indoors somewhere. We can also plan
exactly where to work, once we are there.
In Calvert, the schedule is about the same as in Bryan, except that
interested people should meet at Mud Creek Pottery, beginning at about 8:30.
I hope that people in other communities will form their own groups and we
will all participate in the world wide event by Drawing The Brazos Valley.
Sketch Crawls are held about every 3 months.
I have registered for the Bryan/College Station/Calvert/the Brazos Valley
on the Sketch Crawl Forum. You can leave a post there or contact me at
grann...@yahoo.com for more information. You can see some of my pictures
from past sketch crawls on my blog and on Flickr.
Pass this information on to anyone who might be interested.
Hope to see a good group out sketching Saturday!
