I just bought a new condenser for my pickup truck and will need some A/C gauges and a vacuum pump in order to recharge the system after its installed. They aren't that expensive on fleabay - maybe $75 for both if I got the cheapest set.

Does anyone already have these item I could borrow or rent for a few bucks?

You can "rent" them from autozone.  You pay a deposit for the tool and just return it when your done.    I redid the a/c on my rx7 several times, none successful for more than a season.

It's a fair bit up front.   The deposit is the cost of the tool.    You get it all back though.

Was your system completely out of refrigerant?  If not a refrigerant recovery system is the only legal and legit. way to empty the system.  You can't rent those (as far as I know).

I do have a gauge set.

The issue was a slow leak from the compressor.  I have to rebuild it.  If I am going to do that though, I will upgrade the condenser and evaporator to run more efficiently with R-134A.  Last time I refilled it with difluoroethane which is legal and non-harmful to the enviroment.

Went by autozone today to confirm they still did loans and had the tools, and they do. The deposit is the full price of the tool, as you said, and is pretty dang steep! Hope I don't loose anything.

Unrelated, I AM going to buy a rolling tool cart and saw this Austin Craigslist ad: https://collegestation.craigslist.org/tld/4927730638.html

I may make a trip to get one if anyone else is interested (they have a lot) - or perhaps already going to Austin sometime soon.

Make sure you have all the parts when you leave.   I have been in the middle of the job when I found items missing.

Report: awesome resource I didn't know about, got the job done.

And it turns out O'reilly is also ramping up their loaner program with some tools that autozone does not have, and are not yet listed in their catalogs. Add them to your list of resources, too.
