A short happens when there is a poor connection between two conductors supplying electricity, which then causes an overload to the circuit. This overload causes the fuse to blow to prevent the wiring from overheating and melting.

Short circuits are easy to fix but can sometimes be difficult to find within the electrical system as there are a few things that can cause them. Short circuits can result from an electrical device malfunction. For instance, internal damage in the windshield wiper motor can cause more current than normal to flow, which shorts the circuit. Conductors exposed to leaks or other elements can be another cause of short circuits as the fluid gets into the wiring and connection points.

If the wiring is worn out to the point of exposure, then the wire may touch the metal frame or external surface. This will lead to a short circuit as well. Even if the wire moves around a lot and only comes into surface contact occasionally, these intermittent short circuits will eventually lead to a blown fuse.

Most vehicles have two fuse boxes. You can find the first one placed in the engine compartment. This is used to protect the engine components including the anti-lock brake pump, the cooling system, as well as the engine control unit.

When you replace fuses, it is recommended that you use the exact amperage as the one that you are replacing. Do not mix 10-amp fuses with 30-amp fuses as this will only lead to another blown fuse and further damage to the component. So there is little confusion, there will be a range of numbers and colors in the fuse box that will coincide with the diagram showing what levels of power are required for each fuse.

After you have replaced the broken fuse, you can start the ignition to see if your work has paid off. If that same fuse does not work at all or blows again soon after you replace it, you may need to take your vehicle to a mechanic to see what is wrong with that specific electrical component.

Engine failure, especially out of the blue, can be scary. It can put a wrench in your plans if driving somewhere important and depending on the problem, can be expensive to fix. Thankfully, there are lots of warning signs that can signal you when your engine is about to fail.

The headlight washers were not working... they are supposed to come on a few seconds after pushing the washer button if its held in. So, they were definitely not popping up even after 20 seconds of holding in the washer button.

Inside the cab, I took out both fuses for windshield wiper washer (15), and rear wash wipe (14) - which mine does not have because its a sedan WRX. I suspected it may be fuse 14 therefore. But, there was no fuse problem with either when I electrically tested both.

I then went to the front fuse box in the engine compartment and checked all the relays, just pushing them in slightly to see they were home and located properly. They were all connected...

I checked the headlight washers and suddenly they were working! I can only hope this fixes it for a while.

So, I reckon it was a simple loose connection on a relay, but I don't know which one because the car manual shows what the fuses are, but doesn't show what the relays are. Doh!

It will help all if someone here has a WRX and WRX STi fuse and relay diagram :) With Thanks.

ok, I found a diagram of the relays - it's under the fuse box cover! Obvious and should have looked there. Now, I still don't know what relay it is though or if it even uses one? Can't see it... what's a SBF or ALT-Def or any of the others? There's lots of acronyns here which mean little to me because I'm not an electrician lol. See attached photo. Anyone know please?

If washers are fitted to headlights then they have to be both working for a MOT pass. Same if you have headlight wipers. Usually the plastic pop-up fitting breaks which means getting a replacement. As for the relay, I still can't trace it out yet.

I registered on the forum specifically so I could thank your for this post! One of the covers fell off and I spent ages trying to get the washer to extend but it wasn't working! I presumed the electrics had gone faulty (its a 2008 model). Started to look at the electrics when I read your post. Turned on headlights and bam! washers extended! Thank you!
