Hello - I'm getting the following error(s) when I try to make an annotation that spans multiple lines.

Text-bound annotation text "Paroxysm of the world, to whose horror" shorter than marked span(s) [(279, 318), (319, 349)][NOTE: SOME NONPRINTABLE CHARACTERS REMOVED FROM MESSAGE]

Non-trigger "T1 Utterance 279 318;319 349 Paroxysm of the world, to whose horror" used by "E1 Utterance:T1 " as trigger[NOTE: SOME NONPRINTABLE CHARACTERS REMOVED FROM MESSAGE]

Unknown error: eventWithNonTrigger

What I'm not sure is whether the line-spanning error is because brat annotations cannot span multiple lines, or whether there's an error in how I've setup the annotation scheme (quite possible, since I'm new to brat).  My annotation scheme file is attached.

Context:
  • MacOS (Catalina) using Safari browser
  • I'm trying to annotate the text of a play written in verse, so I do not want to remove the line breaks. For example, the error above was created when I tried to annotate "Paroxysm of the world, to whose horror the universal factory expires!" as an event annotation.
  • I've tried getting an entity annotation to span lines as well (as a test), and that also breaks things.
Thank you!  Any help is appreciated.

First, a general question: are you using the bundled tar.gzip packaged brat from the website? I don’t know if anyone even remembers how to update it; that version is extremely old and has many bugs that were fixed later. I strongly recommend cloning from github instead.

I can’t remember if that is one of such issues. Can you send me an example of txt/Ann you got the error with? Then I could be much more specific.

Ah, I AM using that version of brat. I switch to the github version and see if that fixes the problem.
