The French grip is favoured by many iconic drummers including Steve Jordan and Jojo Mayer. Your fingers have a larger role in controlling the stick than other grips and for some players this can lead to a greater increase in speed and control.

Because even when playing two notes with each hand, you only really need one wrist movement. You can rely on the bounce that we discussed earlier in the stick section to provide the height you need for the second note.

Did you spot this? The eagle-eyed among you will have noticed that the paradiddle is two single strokes followed by two double strokes. The other half of the paradiddle is a mirror image of the first.

Exact prices depend on the program and may vary between locations. What's included? Unlike most hourly drum lessons, our programs include weekly private drum lessons and group rehearsals that inspire confidence and teamwork. Drum students are also welcome to use our facilities whenever we're open, even if they just want to hang out and learn from or collaborate with other musicians. Find your location.

While four years old is a little young for formal drum lessons, it's not too early to begin teaching your child musical concepts that will be important once they are old enough for drum instruction at School of Rock. Your 4-year-old can participate in the Little Wing music program to learn fundamental concepts through fun, dynamic musical activities.

Students are encouraged to purchase their own drums, especially as they reach higher skill levels. School of Rock does let kids borrow drums for rehearsal, but for best results our drum teachers recommend students to have a drum set at home for daily practice, and a practice kit is a good, quiet option.

At School of Rock, we teach private drums lessons in-person or online in conjunction with weekly band rehearsals meant to build confidence and teamwork. While we do offer private drum instruction, we strongly encourage students to play in band rehearsals as a way of exploring group dynamics as they become more proficient on the drums.

At School of Rock, our drum instructors encourage students to regularly practice, use reliable equipment, and most importantly ask questions. We start with teaching key skills like rudiments, tempo, rhythm, and how to set up a drum set. Our approach enables students to succeed and make learning fun.

All students are different, and some are ready to play before others. As a parent, you can look for signs that your child is ready for drum lessons. Check out our resource on the best age to learn to play drums for more information.

Our drum faculty are graduates of such prestigious institutions as New York University, Indiana University, the Berklee College of Music, Oxford University, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, South Carolina Governors School for the Arts, the Atlanta Guitar Institute and Columbia College. Many have toured the US and Europe, and bring over 25 years of professional performance and teaching experience to your lessons.

Our instructors challenge our students with wide-ranging technical exercises designed to improve speed and comfort. Drum language can be complex, and theory is encouraged. Students can bring in their favorite drum parts to learn in their lessons.

Definitely not. Our professional, soundproof drum lesson rooms in Columbia are equipped with a Roland drum kit for our students. Just bring your drum sticks and a notebook. Beginning students can practice at home with a drum pad and sticks for only $25.

Of course, you should also devote time to talking with the student about what he or she hopes to get out of drum lessons, and whether they have any specific goals (get into middle school jazz band, start a rock back with friends, develop rudimentary technique for marching band, become a master of blast beats, etc.)

For true beginners with zero experience, I recommend going into the first lesson with three goals: 1) establish an awareness of steady beat, 2) get started on developing good hand technique, and 3) teach them a basic drum beat.

If the student is a total beginner and has a drum set, you can lean a little more on the drum beat portion of the lesson plan described above. Follow the instructions for learning steady beat and good hand technique, but be sure to watch the clock and allow time to get a basic beat happening on the drums.

"Piano was always my favorite form of meditation." Self-proclaimed "music junkie" Ben Kohl has been taking lessons since age six. Though he's been playing for most of his life, he's still surprised by what regular piano lessons allow him to accomplish. Read on...

A while back we published Why Taking Music Lessons with Your Kid is Awesome. Our friend Brendan Bosworth, owner of Meter Music School in Seattle, countered with this assertion: Leaving your kids alone during lessons is awesome, too. This may be...

Learning to play an instrument is one of the best ways to exercise your brain and grow as a person. It has been proven that critical development and problem solving centers of your brain are activated while playing an instrument. Check out this article on what happens when you play an instrument.

Many of my past students have gone on to play music professionally in bands, studios, tours, and orchestras. Some have moved on to study at prestigious music schools such as Berklee, McGill, Humber, University of Toronto, University of Southern California, and the University of North Texas.

My policy is to help students explore music in a fun and interactive way. I find learning is encouraged in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, and I believe this approach to be the strongest method for lasting results.

My central Vancouver private lesson studio allows easy access for students anywhere in the GVA. I can be easily reached by those in surrounding cities such as Richmond, Burnaby, Coquitlam, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Delta, or New Westminster.

Drum lessons with me are private, one-on-one style sessions. I find private lessons are better than a group approach since I can focus all of my attention on one student. Lessons are either 30 minutes to 1-hour in length and usually happen at a set time once a week.

With beginners, I tend to focus on rock and pop styles of music because they are the easiest to grasp quickly. Once you are comfortable behind the kit and understand the basic concepts, we can begin to move into styles and topics that are of more interest to you.

Intermediate students are great because the basics are already under control. This gives me more time to fix bad habits and improve upon what is already there. These lessons are where things start to get fun!

Since basics like reading, styles, and technique are out of the way, we can move into the ethereal, discuss concepts, tone production, and intense song and drummer analysis. If you are just looking for new practice ideas, technique checks, or even career advice, I offer that too.
