In any app that allows text editing, open the onscreen keyboard by tapping a text field. Tap individual keys to type, or use QuickPath to type a word by sliding from one letter to the next without lifting your finger (not available for all languages). To end a word, lift your finger. You can use either method as you type, and even switch in the middle of a sentence. (If you tap after sliding to type a word, it deletes the whole word.)

If you add keyboards for other languages, you can type in two languages without having to switch between keyboards. Your keyboard automatically switches between the two languages you use most often. (Not available for all languages.)

If you add a keyboard for a different language, the corresponding language is automatically added to the Preferred Language Order list. You can view this list and add languages directly to it in Settings > General > Language & Region. You can also reorder the list to change how apps and websites display text.

Just to clarify, things have moved on a bit since this solution was posted. You can still do the down swipe above the keyboard, which is standard in the OS, but you can also just use the keyboard button on the right of the bar (iPhone), or use the standard hide-keyboard button on the iPad (bottom-right).

This is just so accurate. I was discussing this with a friend who tells me they never face any issue with the keyboard. I felt so gaslit that I had to check this out. Do you guys still feel the keyboard sucks on iOS 17? I swear it was better on the 17 beta. I wonder at what moment it got bad again.

I just bought an iPhone 12 mini and when I go to pair my 645 Music with Garmin connect, I get the pair dialog on the phone and it asks me to enter the six-digit code on my watch. Problem is, when I touch the empty box to enter the code, the keyboard on the phone is supposed to appear to enter the code. But I can't get the keyboard to show, so there is now way to enter the code. So, no way to pair.

There is currently a bug where if you are not using the default iOS keyboard then it won't show up for the filter. This is a known bug and it's being looked into. Hopefully it will be fixed in a future update.

I'm building a USB keyboard that has two buttons - space and enter. The plan is to use this USB keyboard (with an Apple Lightning connector to USB) with the built in iOS switch control. I bought the lightning to USB dongle, and hooked it up to a normal keyboard, and it works fine.

Next, I took an Arduino Micro (ATMEGA32u4) and programed it to act as a keyboard with the two keys I need (space and enter). On a PC, it works just fine, but when I hook it up to my iPhone, I get the message:

I hooked up a meter to the normal keyboard, and it draws just over 4mA. When I hook up the Arduino, it is drawing almost 40mA. While the Arduino is drawing much more than the keyboard, it should be okay, because when I plugged in a flash drive, it was drawing 50mA, but the iPhone didn't complain.

Bitmoji lets you create enhanced, personalized emojis that are based on your own appearance. While you can send Bitmojis directly from the app, it's more convenient to add them to messages from your iPhone's keyboard. Simply installing the app doesn't add Bitmoji to your keyboard, though; you need to do that yourself.

Go to your Settings menu, then General, then scroll down and tap Keyboard. In the next screen you can ensure your preferences are up to date for things like auto-correction, predictive text suggestions to appear above the keyboard and automatic capitalization.

The Enable Caps Lock option is also useful. When enabled, a double-tap on the shift key allows you to type in all capital letters. You'll know when you've turned it on in the keyboard view because you will see a little line appear beneath the arrow on the shift key and the keyboard turns into all caps.

If you like, or need at times, to type one-handed, there's a simple trick that makes the keyboard smaller and shifted over slightly to one side or the other. This is particularly useful on Apple's larger iPhone models, such as the iPhone XS Max and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

If you have multiple keyboards enabled, just tap and hold on the emoticon or globe icon at the bottom left of your keyboard and you'll see the option to squash the keyboard to either the left- or right-hand side of your phone's screen.

Another keyboard feature you might not be aware of that can be changed is the functionality that lets you turn off what Apple calls "Character Preview." This is where the character "key" you type enlarges for a second as you type it, popping up on your screen.

If you have several keyboards on your iPad or iPhone, you can change their order or appearance as you tab through them with the globe key. You will need to setup the TextExpander keyboard before you can adjust its order in the keyboard list.

Gary: Nope, and the interesting thing is that the first time I tried your solution it worked like a charm. The second (and successive tries) no nice. My keyboard is in English. I bought my iPhone SE in Austin,Texas, but I am using it in Mazatlan Mexico so I have no idea what region I'm in. Sorry.

Pete: What does it show in Settings, General, Language & Region? What is the top preferred language, and what is the Region set to? Doesn't matter where you are, it is what you have them set to. Also, are you maybe using a third-party keyboard you have installed? Look at Settings, General, Keyboard, Keyboards at the top, and then see what has a checkmark.

Jeff: So you are in the Mail app and trying to type an email address? I can understand that there is no comma on the keyboard in that situation since commas are not allowed in email addresses. You must be mistaken about the address as that is simply not allowed in any email system.

After the reset, the keyboard dictionary will slowly learn your habits and store new words. If you want to prevent your iPhone from making suggestions, you need to turn off predictive text and autocorrect.

After installing a new iPhone keyboard, tap the globe icon at the bottom of the screen to change keyboards. If you have several keyboards installed, keep tapping the globe until you see the keyboard you want. You can also change the keyboard language.
