Dear All,
I am celebrating International Book Giving Day (which was on 2/14) all month, with the goal of GIVING every elementary student in my supervisory union who's involved in a reading improvement program A BRAND NEW BOOK (RNESU).
Those that know me, know that I have championed literacy for most of my teaching career. Anymore, what I see playing out in classrooms is the burden of poverty and family stressors on our youngest population. I also see that relationships matter. As I work with reading interventionists and their students struggling with reading, I see a key opportunity to make a difference in young readers' lives. I would like to honor this instructional work and these important relationships by giving the teacher-interventionists some new shiny books - enough so that they can give a new book to each of their students. This will be a book the adult will read with the child and help them learn to read independently. I am so excited about this and look forward to they day when I bring their books to them!
So, I am having an Usborne book fundraiser. Usborne books are some of the highest quality out there. I am partnering with Brooke Kimball, another educator and an Usborne consultant, to offer this book buying opportunity for you. If I can get just $100 in sales - Brooke is giving me an additional $200 toward books, on top of the regular party earnings. Easter is coming up - a perfect time to select a book for someone's Easter basket. Or, maybe you have a young person in your life having a birthday soon. I'm hoping the timing is right - and that you will take this opportunity to pick out a book for someone you care about. There are book titles for readers from birth to adolescence (and, I suspect, some you would enjoy!) - the Usborne collection covers a wide range of age and interests.
I hope you will consider participating.
You can also contact me directly to see a catalog or to arrange another way to make a donation.
And, if you can't do it this time, maybe do this instead? Read Across America day is coming up on March 2nd (Dr, Seuss's birthday).
Find a favorite children's book to read with a child on that day - which over the last 20 years has gained momentum in our communities and schools.
Thank you for your consideration. I rarely do this with my email/Facebook friends, but I am determined to honor reading relationships and get books in kids hands.
Best,
Laura King
