We’ve come a long way since January 1, 1901. The record states, “The library opened with a pleasant reception, attended by a large number of townspeople.” Before the library was a year old there were 210 borrower cards in use and 1448 books on the shelves. In 1902 the association voted to move to the front room of the lower floor of the Parmenter Block, the building which the library still occupies. Today, the Brandon Free Public Library serves the towns of Brandon, Sudbury, Leicester, and Goshen with almost 2300 borrower cards and more than 45,000 holdings.

Our beautiful building has become so much more than a repository for books; it’s where community happens. This gorgeous historical building offers a comfortable and accessible space for our myriad community groups. On many Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and Saturdays throughout the year, our meeting room is full of people congregating. From the Girl Scouts to the Boy Scouts, Democrat and Republican Caucuses, we offer space to anyone who needs it, free of charge.

The Library is used by the Planning Commission, Main Street Brandon (formerly the Downtown Brandon Alliance), The Farmer’s Market, and for ‘Safe Serv’ food safety classes. The Estabrook Award is presented here and The Homeowner’s Association, the Child Care Provider’s Association, a local writer’s group, Otter Valley tutors, and Everybody Wins all use this space for their various needs.

Every month we showcase local artists who wish to present their art to the public and the library becomes a quasi-art gallery! How fortunate we are to be able to present the creativity of our fellow community members to all members of the community.

As evidenced by the number of groups that utilize us, we are an ideal place for meetings in a private space that is accommodating, friendly and warm. We accommodate any time during our regular hours, which include Saturdays and some evenings until 8pm. The library is open 42+ hours a week.

It’s easy to reserve the meeting room – just give Steph, Lynn or Molly a call at the Library and we’ll put you on the calendar! (802) 247-8230
