Archer posted 10-23-06 06:49 EST (US) 1 / 9 Hi Darren,
Seems noone is answering you... well, I picked the game up on saturday morning and had my first chance at playing it on Sunday. I had previously played a little of the original Stronghold game, which I enjoyed but did not play for long.First impressions were good, graphically I can run the game maxxed out with all the antialiasing, anistropic filtering cranked to the maximum (see pc spec below), but I have a widescreen 20.1" monitor so my native resolution is 1680 X 1050. Everything looks pretty fine to me, I have played many games so graphically for an RTS game this looks as good as any others, and I sufffer from no slow down when lots of units are on screen etc so that is great.
They are more than adequate for a game of this style, but the troops being able to walk through each other is a little annoying to look at, but does not affect game play.Sound is pretty good also, is nice to hear the troops talking/moaning etc, would have been cool if you could hear their marching footsteps also and more enviromental stuff like wind and rain etc.. but that is just me On to the campaign, well I have not played an RTS reguarly for at least 4 years, I picked up Age of Empires 3 a few months back but to me was not as enjoyable as Age of Empires 2 was, and so within about an hour of frustration as was too similar to the previous title and to be honest for me the Age of Kings was the best one due to me liking the time period more - I deleted from hard drive. (Age of Mythology was cool also)So what about Stronghold Legends, I have not got very far in it at the moment, I am playing it on the default setting which is medium diffilculty and game speed is 40. Currently *grins stupidly* I have only got as far as Arthur!, and still trying to finish the mission, maybe I am rusty or just useless not sure which .The AI is pretty good, I have repeated some of the missions and seems the enemy does not do the exact same thing every time, may be something similar.. but not the same, so is hard to guess and so you need to think on your toes, I can see the later missions being really tricky but is enjoyable, I hate being beaten so have repeated the Arthur mission a good few times and will make those Saxon suffer foe making me feel so weak and foolish .As mentioned I have not got very far into the game (maybe I should lower the diffilculty or game speed), but the Hero units are a great addition, each one having a special useful ability. what I really like about them is the fact they do not move fast, it takes a while to maneouvere them to the location you want them in and as it takes some time to do this you will need to guard them with troops. I have not had a chance to play multiplayer yet, scared of getting my butt kicked in a matter of minutes.. but I will and can see it being really challenging and great fun. There are lots of units and buildings in game and micro management, take a while for me to learn them all and that is what will make me play this game over all other RTS games for at least the immediate future, and maybe beyond. The Game for me at least is addictive, challenging and pretty to look at for the 24.99 I got it delivered to my door for is great value, I can see myself playing this for a long time and for what I paid for it it is not even a night out down the pub!Only fault I can see that has dissapointed me, is not the game, but the game website has a lack of information there, no mention of patches etc, is one of the worst gamesites I have ever seen. Come on Firefly! you showed yourselves able to make a good game, now make a better website with more information and a forum! then you will get more fans and sell more games, I nearly missed out on this game as the lack of information available.Would be nice to see strategies listed there, unit abilites etc, I know you can read the manual, but for people who are wondering whether to buy the game or not, this is what they like to see.All in all I would recommend the game, If you like RTS games I cannot see any reason why you would not like to play this game

Archer posted 10-23-06 23:48 EST (US) 2 / 9 I have the Special edition and started playing on 17 Oct.I started the campaigns, and tried to play it with hard setting - there are only three: easy, normal and hard -, I wanted to see how well i would manage.
I had been playing Stronghold 2, not as intensively as Stronghold, and was not doing too bad, though I did not finish all the ingame missions, my computer not being able to run the game for a while. I Started with the Arthur trail. I got the grip on it and got hooked, I played several missions in a row, and my sleep got reduced to not much.
I really enjoyed the game.
I am not so much a fan of hroc fantasy in games, and I was afraid to see the "Stronghold spirit", the "castle sim reference" vanish; sweeped by the magical side. I was worried to see it become too mystic. In fact, it's a medieval "mytholegendical" game, and to my opinion, very well done. I have been playing several RTS games with a magic side and this one offers a great combination. What do I like?... I was quite pleased not to have to worry about the clean up like in Stronghold 2. The special units and siege weapons are awesome, I particularly love the "rampant", the wolf with the big red eyes, don't know how you called it in the english version, the one that turns the enemy archers to your side. The design of the castles is very nice and the bad side castle reminds me of the tower in LOTR, it must be intentional... The hole in the ground with the appearing wolfs, adapted version of the bandits hideout, reminds me of one of the special powers available in age of mythology, and fits perfectly. The powers of the lords are nice and varied, it's a pleasure to have all of them on your side with the round table when playing Arthur, and to be able to use all those powers. A big problem is not to be able to select forces if they get out of the screen. I saw you mentioned this could/would be resolved.
It's nice to have put the lords on horses, but if you send them to the keep, they get off the horse and the horse disappears. How do you get another one? I faced one glitch in the second part of the first mission of the Arthur trail: I built a wall over the damaged tower and when I sent archers onto the wall, the ones standing where the tower still is appeared in the air, like if they were onto the top of a tower. (See below)
When I played the mission "Vengeance" with the bad side, the game crashed during the second part of the mission. I restarted once more, and it crashed exactly at the same moment. I started a third time but saved before it crashed again, that was before the second invasion. On the second try I had gotten rid of all the mens before they could reach the walls, only the swordsmen were still on the way, and the four siege towers. I had noticed the games crashed twice when the towers reached the walls. On my third try, I destroyed all four towers before they could reach the walls and the game did not crash...Something strange also happened when I played the first mission of the Ice side. You are supposed to kill the giant Sigenot and to save Dietrich to win the mission. It says to stay away of the dragons that would be taken care of later.
I eliminated all the forces to the castle, used the superpower to send forces into the section where Dietrich is kept, sent them onto the gate, Dietrich appeared free and I sent him near the wall where my forces were. I killed the giant, and the castle vanished. I did not have the victory screen. I have reached both goals, but nothing happened. I sent all the forces to the main castle, back to the castle of the giant; nothing. The red spot showing where Dietrich was kept previously was still appearing on the minimap. I figured I maybe had to kill the dragons. Which I did. But I was still ingame. I sent all the forces back to the castle, and though I had done this before, when they got to the keep, I finaly got the victory screen. I started the next part of the mission and the objective was to get rid of the dragons, which I already had done, I got the victory screen right away... I am curious to know how others played the mission "Siegfried" with the dragon "Fafnir". I tried many ways to make it, on very hard setting, but it's really a hard one. I finaly managed to win, but with an unusual strategy.I have not finished all the missions yet, and have not tried multiplayer, I might; next saturday. All in one, Stronghold Legends is really a good purchase, if you have a computer than has the specifications to run it properly.
I totaly agree with Blade Wannabe that "The Game for me at least is addictive, challenging and pretty to look at".I play with all the settings to the max, and the game runs fine, it seems to run smoother than Stronghold 2.

Archer posted 10-25-06 17:20 EST (US) 7 / 9 Its ok - I finished the last of the campaigns last night and thought it was quite good. Here are a few likes and dislikes:Likes>Fantasy units - especially the evil ones, Creeprs and Bats can be devastating
>Being able to have units on the Siege towers whilst moving
>Easy 'mount Horse' options - but how do I dismount the Main units>
>Ballistas etc are not so devastating than in SH2 (Should make Multiplayer better)
>'Peace time' option in Multiplayer
>Range of maps on MultiplayerDislikes>Lack of continuety on storylines (A good example of this was the last mission on the Arthur campaigns - I finished of Mordred on the last mission and then was dead in the following storyline with no real explanation as to how )
>Giants can be killed by Kill pits too easily
>Ballista dont seem to attack anything even when on 'attack mode' unless you point them at an enemyThere are alot more but I have limited time...I have only played multiplayer a few times but with great success.Oh yeah - when you guys up for multiplayer nextcheers
p.s - can you counteract enemy creepers with your own when they try to turn your units>K
