i have reached N-back level 7 and it i am at a plateau for about a
month now. i get in about 30 sessions a day, trying to follow much of
the techniques outlined by these forums. curious to see how many n-
backers on this forum have reach level 8 and above and what worked to
break through? at that these levels of n-back what are are your iq
test results?

I've mostly been training 1s intervals on 5 and 6 back. However, I'd
had some brief forays into 8-back territory on cognitivefun.net and
have messed around on it some on my computer with 50-80%. I primarily
use 2x4 chunking for 8-Back. Although its sometimes considered
pretentious to post IQ scores (although I don't what is to be gained
by "bragging" in an internet forum when nobody knows who you are?),
since you asked...I scored a 141 (99.3%) on the WAIS-IV administered
by a Psy-D student friend of mine (I wasn't supposed to know but I was
able to get a glimpse; also that's not an "official" score as person
licensed can give such a score...but its probably more accurate than
internet tests...but on what I consider "good" internet tests i've
gotten from about 130-150) I also scored a 168 (96th percentile) on
the LSAT.

On a related note, a fellow showed up at cogntivefun.net and dominated
T9B quite quickly and when people ask about his/her IQ the person
casually said that he/she had got the ceiling on a number standardized
IQ tests. Perhaps it was multiple people or may Chris Langdon
chilling is Missouri. who knows.

I assume the IQ test was before you started N-backing? That'd be great; even greater would be if you could have your friend re-do it in a while. I haven't dug up too many before-after IQ comparisons for the FAQ.

Well. I actually had done some n-backing before the test. However, I
tried not to do any the few weeks before it. I plan on retaking some
tests eventually; but for any official iq test i'll have to wait until
i've got an income stream :) However, I took the LSAT prior to any n-
backing so I think i could get one of those "official" practice
booklets and see if my score has improved. My feeling is that the
LSAT is fairly g-loaded. At the the logic games and reasoning
sections. The reading comprehension section is next to worthless and
exceptionally easy. I also took the GRE a few years back and verbal
section might have some g-loadedness. However, i think any that any
gains on this test would mostly be explained by an abnormally large
and continuous exposure to new vocabulary that law school afford
coupled with ready access to good dictionaries via computer.

however, when/if i take or re-take any tests i'll post the result
along with my n-back levels at that point.

I've just started the brain workshop, mainly to play the quad n back,
where I've just reached 4 quad back.

As for dual n back, I've reached 9 back on other versions and today I
hit 8 back on 4.5 brainshop version. From day to day, though, I
average around 7 back. I've been playing for a while and consistently,
so I suppose the secret to reaching a fairly high n back level is just
the doing it. Failing that, you might want to try concentration
exercises to get you over the hump, stillling the mind from chatter.
I've noticed when I do concentration stuff it helps my n back work. I
do a technique called pseudo telekinesis, which seems to help me
focus. That being said, there are lots of focus techniques out there
so you can just run a google on it.

Just for additional info, my brain workout consists of the following
that have turned out to be relative staples in my workout: I hope they
all complement each other and I'm always looking for new techniques;
this is what is occupies my regimin these days.

Dual N back (and now quad) mainly for Working memory.
Piracetam + choline (as an aid for general functioning)
Mybraintrainer.com (mainly for processing speed and exec functions,
not so much their memory stuff as that's just overkill).
Cognitivefun -- occasionally PASAT for auditory and I do their dual n
back for the change in auditory.
Tetris -- visual spatial/planning.
Visual Puzzle books
Reading fiction, non fiction, etc...
"Running" on the treadmill
Mnemonics

Related work out notions I've abandoned because I'm not sure they work
(but could be wrong):

-- Image streaming (though I still think it's a good idea. I just
can't buy into it for some reason).
-- "Jogging" on the treadmill
-- Mensa and IQ clubs.
-- Over-priced "easy style" brain training programs marketed to
seniors.

What about lumosity.com? I think that DNB helps to improve my lumosity score while lumosity increase my DNB score.

Lumosity is probabaly as effective as anything else out there and
inexpensive -- I used it for a whiile. I do think mybraintrainer's
excercises are more in line with the literature on elementary
cognitive tasks, which is why I use it. Also, ranking comparison is
available to other users on tasks that, when taken together, have a
high g loading.

Milestones That is a pretty good regimen. Have you taken any iq tests
before and after? Curious to see what type of results you saw from n-
back. Have you noticed anything of the choline? Curious about the
choline.

Hard to say on IQ scores because I did not work this out
systematically.

There may be roughly a 5-10 point improvement on both fluid and
composite measures since I've started training a year ago. I am far
less forgetful than I was when I first started training; my working
memory seems to help me out in every day life, which is why I have
continued to train. This is subjective impression, but real enough.
I'm not being coy by omitting IQ scores but rather don't have
professional test results to report, so I'm omitting for that
reaon.

I've run out of choline but have not been getting headaches with
piracetam...but hope to order more as choline is good to take with
piracetam based on what I've read, though I don't detect the
difference of taking choline versus not taking choline.
