Hey guys! I just want to know if you are feeling / noticing any
changes in gf at all like Jaeggi claims. I don't really care that much
about IQ, but I'm very interested in improvements on tests that
measures gf. Is gf really improved or do you just get better at the n-
back task? Do you actually notice any difference in learning speed or
problem solving skills than earlier. Are you for real able to pick up
new skills easier than you did before. That's what interests me the
most.

That's a lot of questions guys, but I feel like I need some answers if
I'm going to spend that much time on it. My current level is dual 4-
back.

Thanks!

Gf correlates so highly with IQ to the point that when doing factor analysis it's mainly those types of tests that matters. For instance if you are given a battery of tests the gf tests usually is twice
as g-loaded as gc-tests, some gv-tests are at par with the gf tests. Matrix tests that are somewhere in between perceptual and pure reasoning tests usually shows a high g-load but they are not pure measures of gf. Do I feel any difference? Yes, if  you walked to your job in 20 minutes and some other day did it in 12 you would almost certainly feel a difference in your stamina. Same goes with n-backing. It will make those parts of the brain more efficient. It will make it easier to take on demanding tasks that requires your full attention and working memory, like gf-tests usually does.

Thanks for your reply! I will definitely continue doing this.

How long do you think it'll take before I start to see some
improvements (math etc.)?

You can feel it every time you go "all out". It's feels easier, but as you get accustomed to it might be less profound. I did some real improvement mainly in theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics. Got the highest oral exam score that I ever had in proving theorems in discrete mathematics. However, the improvements might vary between individuals. I begin to suspect that the self regulation that n-backing demands might play a larger role than the improvements in the task itself. But nobody really knows. But yes, math will become easier, in general all tasks that require focus, self regulation and working memory. Like Gf tests and math do.

If I just see the slightest improvement, I will be really happy and
convinced that brain training actually works. Can't wait for it to
happen ;)

I use the dnb game at http://www.brainboffin.com/. What site/program/
app do you guys prefer?

Pontus, strategy or no strategy? I have better result with trying to
recall letters, and always updating, but this may be counter
productive in the long run, any thoughts?

It's the same for me. I also wonder what is the proper way to do it.

more players ask about letters than position, why?

Interesting question, I find position recall fairly easy constrated
with letter recall.

I find that the only n-back mode that seems to work for me is Single
Position n-back. I notice increased flexibility, speed,
comprehension, visualization ability, simultaneous ability, etc, but I
doubt that there's any transfer to Gf. I went at position n back for
about 4 weeks straight but stopped recently because the semester has
started and position n back is pretty draining.

I would be surprised if pnb didn't transfer to trail making tests. Which explains almost half of the variance in intelligence. I also find it hard to combine intense work with n-backing. But I try to do a few trials anyways just for more oxygen in the brain.

I can certainly empathize with the fatigue factor, however, overtime
it begins to decrease the more consistent you are with training for an
allotted time.

Personally, I remember a time where I was heavily fatigued just after
20min of regular dual-n-back. I have now reached a point where I can
consistently train for 2+ hours (on various modes) each day without
suffering too much fatigue or compromising my ability when performing
other mentally strenuous exercises.

I am currently studying more than a full-time load (Medical science -
6 subjects/units per semester) at uni & I generally don't have any
problems keeping up with training. So, to reiterate, I think the
average person will have no difficulties in achieving this if they
build up their efforts overtime.
