When I am playing single n back on cognitivefun.net, I'm naming the
images I see in my head when I'm storing the mental picture. I have a
feeling that this greatly slows down my thinking process. My
visualization skills are not very good and I want to improve them. I
need to find a way to shut off my left brain when I am playing single
n back. Does anybody know how I can tap into my right brain thinking
and shut off the voice in my head that wants to name everything I see??

just practice. the intention of doing it, your left brain will eventually catch on and this voice will stop. this won't be immediate as you will be re-training yourself.

Well, you can't really "turn off" your left brain, and I don't think
that would be a very good idea. From the sound of it, you don't want
to rely on your phonological loop (the chatty voice in your head). If
you're having a hard time not using it during the task, then I
recommend you practice quieting your mental chatter outside of the
task. It's simple: if you start hearing words in your head, make them
stop. With practice, I think most people can inhibit the voice in
their head, especially since it really isn't need for any kind of task
you would have to do, except dealing with others' phonological output
(words).

Visualizing things is a different process, on the other hand, and the
only way to get better at it is to focus on visualizing everything in
your mind's eye. Some people find it is easier to visualize if their
eyes are closed, so go ahead and give that a shot for a while. Other
people find it easy to visualize with their eyes open, though, which
has the unfortunate effect of blocking out incoming visual stimuli
(due to thalamic override). I'd say your ability to visualize would be
thoroughly equipped for NB if you can visualize with your eyes open,
at which point you won't have to rely on the phonological loop to
handle the visual data, if you can alternatively access the visually
stored information and the incoming visual information.

In effect, you have two things to do to accomplish your goal, and it's
merely a matter of your doing it until you get into the habit of it.

one nostril breathing may help activate the hemisphere of the brain you want!
usually it keeps alternating on its own due to natural cycle (2-3 hours cycle).

check the paper at pubmed:
'The effects of unilateral forced nostril breathing on cognition'
if you want to turn-off left hemisphere, breath through left nostril (it will activate the right side brain)!
how to do that?
1. simplest way is to lie on your right side, with left nostril towards roof side. after a while, right nostril would get blocked, and you would be breathing through your left nostril.

i read it on net, but didn't try:
2.put the thumb/hand under the armpit of other side and put pressure. it will force the air flow throughparticular nostril. i forgot which side is linked to which nostril.
3. putting cotton in one ear. again, i don't remember which side ear will affect which nostril.

When you play dual n back make a change in the settings to have color as your second stimulus, i'm a designer and after a while of playing dnb i noticed that my drawing got better on a different level than regular practice made it better it was a leap in sensory input that made my under standing of a two dimensional system of 3d representation better, but than i thought lets up the stakes and change wm practice more specialized and more suited for my profession and since than it's got way better.Another grat way to improve visualisation is Yoga nidra since it puts you in a kind of meditative state and makes you recall different types of sensation and in a sense teaches you how to manipulate your senses, and of course start drawing!!!

For visualizing I would look up "Image streaming" by Win Wenger.
