Well, you can't really "turn off" your left brain, and I don't think
that would be a very good idea. From the sound of it, you don't want
to rely on your phonological loop (the chatty voice in your head). If
you're having a hard time not using it during the task, then I
recommend you practice quieting your mental chatter outside of the
task. It's simple: if you start hearing words in your head, make them
stop. With practice, I think most people can inhibit the voice in
their head, especially since it really isn't need for any kind of task
you would have to do, except dealing with others' phonological output
(words).
Visualizing things is a different process, on the other hand, and the
only way to get better at it is to focus on visualizing everything in
your mind's eye. Some people find it is easier to visualize if their
eyes are closed, so go ahead and give that a shot for a while. Other
people find it easy to visualize with their eyes open, though, which
has the unfortunate effect of blocking out incoming visual stimuli
(due to thalamic override). I'd say your ability to visualize would be
thoroughly equipped for NB if you can visualize with your eyes open,
at which point you won't have to rely on the phonological loop to
handle the visual data, if you can alternatively access the visually
stored information and the incoming visual information.
In effect, you have two things to do to accomplish your goal, and it's
merely a matter of your doing it until you get into the habit of it.
