I must be misunderstanding something. You are able to play dual n back 17? You can simultaneously hold 17 sounds and 17 square locations in your head? Did you start off playing dual n back as someone who has synesthesia, an eidetic memory, a genius level IQ, a prodigy level working memory, or any other rare trait? If not, did dual n back make you any of those things? How has n backing changed you (if it has)?

I highly suspect that he uses some kind of memory technique. So he's "cheating" in a way.
I mean the average person can hold 7 items for 50% of trials (or 3.5 dual n back average) at one time in their mind with the standard deviation of 2. Therefore he is 13.5(z-score) standard deviations above average. Which is an absurdly high percentile that isn't even on a z-score table. Like smarter than 99.9999999999999999999% of the human population.

Which basically means statistically, assuming that dual n back score directly or highly correlates with memory span, his working memory is > elon musk * Einstein, in just 82 days of dual n back.

As far as we know, not only is he the smartest man to ever exist but he is the smartest being to ever exist. I feel like he would have better things to do than post on an obscure google group. He is basically God after all.

Seriously though, it's either a fabrication or he's using a memory technique like the loci method or something to "chunk" the data, which is slightly impressive by itself, either on purpose or by accident.

First of all Im not good at english...

The attached pic shows only 82day data.
Because I removed the n back app a few times. So I lost the data in early stages from the beginning day. It needs 1 year achieving n back 17 level.

And its not a fake or fabrication.
And not depends on any other tools.

Im just normal and not smart, ordinary man. So I think everyone can pass it, if someone train it harder.

And,I feel sometimes improved ability of memory compared with that I did not know the n back.

That's the only thing that I can surely say.

If you are ordinary then that is terrible news. That means dual n back doesn't do much good. I hope you mean you were ordinary when you first started playing. If you were normal before and now are super smart then that would be good news.

Frankly speaking, my memorizing ability dramatically upgraded then the times I do not know the n back.

It gives me great chages especially in memorizing test, or when i analyze the complicated definition problem.

I gurantee the benefits of N back.

Not continually.

Some period evevry day i do more than 30minutes in a day.

Some peridod i removed the app, so i could not play.

Eventually, everage playing times are approximately 3 times in a day.

This question is for wj kim and eun kyung kim. What kind of IQ boost was there? Please give a little more detail. I'd love to hear about all the changes you went through while playing it. When did you really notice the fluid intelligence increase? Did it help you see things in your mind's eye extremely vivid? If so, what level did you have to get to for that to happen? What speed are you playing on and do you use interference or crab n back?

As i said in above,

1. I only use the Android app version n back.
That's all no speed controll or any other opsions. The programm never give me the any discretion of the playing.

Just step by step playing for next level.

2. If you pass the level 7, you can feel easily remember index of the books, phone number, account number, Wifi secret number any other things in your daily life. In my experience, level 7 is the turnning point.

3. Vivid thinking? Before doing n back, I had to draw a pic in the note, when I solve the difficult law cases. But, these days I can imagine the relation of the parties, so dependence on the note is critically diminished.

The thing is with the app default settings versus the brainforge desktop distribution, you have much fewer cycles. Granted this result is still a feat but it would hard to achieve if the number iterations you have to complete didn't go down as you move up n-back levels with the app.

Those applications are easy to cheat, javascript and android games are really easy to hack. I won't trust you even if you make a video because on that site you can read the code and get all the answers before starting the game, I think 17-back is possible but after a very very long period of training (many years) and using mnemonic techniques.

It's interesting to wonder though what a person would be like if they could do n-100 back haha. Perhaps only someone who could do n-125 back would be able to truly pave out the implications of someone that could master n-100 back haha :) . That's the conundrum of being able to know the the breath and depth of ones mental deficiencies along with their widespread implications, only when we're better than can we begin to truly determine the implications of less than in this self improvement context. Perhaps a rule of thumb to follow here then is to, more obviously, always be doing activities that are just beyond your reach to give you perspective on your capabilities, secondly and less obviously, be humble enough to surround yourself (that you could simultaneously trust) with one or more persons smarter than you that are able to tell you all the different ways in which you could improve.

Hi people,

I just wanted to say it is easy to break into the mobile and change the app's database and the other data. And then just run the app and show the manipulated statistics. So I don't believe him, like said before, if somebody would be that smart to reach n-back 17 I am sure he  should be able to write English better than he is showing here. 

I am currently working on my own version of n-back for android & iphone and the max level is in fact 16, so that's why I got a bit nervous reading that somebody could easily reach n-back 16 in a year!

I completely agree with you, that it's unlikely that they had achieved N back 17 level. It's likely a fabrication. But I disagree that using a memory technique is a bad thing. Doesn't that translate into a real life performative advantages? When I do N back 7, I try to remember the first four squares, and the last three squares, and in some cases repeat the first four while the last three are going and vice versa. It's still very intensive and taxing mentally and if I lose focus it messes the whole thing up. I think only a handful of people can even do that, because however you slice it, holding 14 different things simultaneously in your head is hard. Unless there's a memory technique besides that that's actually advantageous i'm not aware of.
