Are Dual n-back strategies found or are they idiosyncratically made?

I'm working under the premise that you have to have some kind of strategy when you are playing to be more accurate or reach higher levels. My question, then, are these strategies formed by yourself or do you learn via a secondary source. The latter seems an easier route to take.
