Visuospatial sketchpad

Very often solving a problem requires using the so called visuospatial sketchpad. For example, when solving equations in head one has to "see" the symbols, move them around and perform substitutions.

Here's an interesting article that describes some buddhist deity meditators dramatically improving their visuospatial skills:

Do you think it would be possible to improve visuospatial sketchpad? Have you noticed any improvements?

These monks spend hours per week visualising in great details their deities in their head, and in spite of that they show no special visuospatial abilities (pre-meditation) compared to others.
I find this article more depressing than encouraging!
