DVBIC News: Official Traumatic Brain Injury Numbers Now Online
The Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center website has recently posted the most comprehensive and accurate statistics available regarding diagnosed cases of traumatic brain injury within the US military. This new information is intended to serve as a resource for service members, veterans, their families, providers, researchers, policy makers, and other citizens concerned about TBI. Using electronic medical records, the Department of Defense has compiled the number of service members diagnosed with traumatic brain injury and determined the severity of the injury on an annual basis dating back to 2000.

"After a Brain Injury, Life Is Not Going to Be Easy; It's Not Going to Be the Same ..."
So says Kelli Williams Gary, who in 1990 sustained a severe brain injury. "But that doesn't mean you can't move forward; you just have to stick with it," she adds. Now a clinical researcher at Virginia Commonwealth University and a licensed occupational therapist for the past 14 years, Kelli has overcome many obstacles to obtain a bachelor's degree, two master's degrees, and a Ph.D. after her injury.

The Story of a Mother, a Son, and Their Second Chance
"For ninety-four days in 2006, my life hurtled backward, then slowly forward again. I got a second chance. A do-over," writes Joan Ryan in her memoir The Water Giver, about her journey as a mother before and after her teenaged son sustained a severe brain injury. During his recovery, as her son had to relearn how to talk, walk, and eat, Ryan became a different mother, one who could finally accept and truly admire her son for who he was instead of who she imagined him to be.
