Wow - lots - I'll take a quick shot again...
OK - the short term memory issue came up during the program and I
blurted out some bad information. I said that the hippocampus was
responsible for short term memory. Oops!! You can have your
hippocampi destroyed, as the famous person HM did, and still have
functional short term memory. The hippocampus is needed to
"consolidate" short term memory into long term memory. That is, it's
needed to create long term memories (of a certain type, but that's too
complicated for right now). I'm going to have to get back to you on
the question at hand.
Gray and white will be covered in the presentation.
Serotonin is involved in lots of things including mood, suicide,
aggression, and pain perception. What serotonin's function is in each
of those is complex. Drugs that boost serotonin activity can help
depression. Drugs that decrease serotonin activity can cause
depression. Depression too is complex.
The brain has no pain receptors - there are pain receptors associated
with blood vessels and the membranes around the brain.
We'll talk about sleep in one of the programs - these phenomena tend
to happen when you are NOT dreaming.
Migraines - same as headaches above.
Mental retardation is usually associated with fairly wide spread
problems in the brain.
Some people report they are able to 'guide' their dreams.
Hope I've helped :)
