Right - Dr. Waldeck and I couldn't get together to work on this last
night - we'll try for today and we'll post what we generate here.
Before the sun goes down, we'll have something posted - hopefully by
early afternoon.
Sorry for the delay :)
A good thing to do with students would be to ask them what they want
the programs to cover. We try to adjust our content to students'
interests. We don't expect that students have done any real
'homework' before most programs - we hope that they just bring a
healthy interest and lots of questions - we LOVE questions!!!
There was a mini-assignment given during the last program, however, to
try to 'operationally define' consciousness when you see it in a non-
verbal organism. You could have your students discuss that. What are
the characteristics of consciousness. Why do you, hopefully, infer
that I'm conscious, when you see me lumbering around, but not a
table. Start with the basics and work up. When I do this exercise
with my students - we usually agree on about 5 non-verbal
characteristics.
Encourage students to come up with questions that can be posted here
on the discussion boards - if we don't deal with the questions
directly during the live programs, we'll try to do so on the
discussion boards. With so many students participating, it's tough to
let everyone ask questions live, but here - the sky is the limit!
Again, if you can find out from your students what questions they have
about neuroscience - that would be great!
Good luck!
