Hi All,

I was speaking to the RNIB Reading Services team this afternoon.  I wanted to order the next book in the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett which I’ve been re-reading.  I spoke to a really nice sensible and helpful lady, and told her I’d got to about number 4 in the Discworld series, and asked her what the next title would be in the series.  She said that her screen would only list titles alphabetically, so unless I already knew what the next book in the series was, she couldn’t help.

I can’t believe what a step backwards this is from the days when you could phone up and easily get this information and wonder who can possibly be specifying and accepting such an extraordinarily badly designed system.

Regards,

Tim

Wow. I can't quite believe it. Now i'm no computer programming expert by any means but even i see this obvious flaw to be, shockingly bad. As you say, gone are the days when you could call the library to be given the title of the next book in a series very easily, to make absolutely certain you would be reading such titles in the correct order. Why should library users be the ones who have to do their preliminary research before calling up with something of this nature? So sorry tim. Your call this afternoon is another clear demonstration of one of the obvious flaws of this system.

Maybe the library should try employing librarians.

This is just sad, does anyone else remember calling up Stockport and getting the reader team and not only would you be able to find the next book in a series, but you could come away with recommendations for all sorts of other books you might like based on your conversation with them? And then you had the read on magazine and you felt like you belonged to a club of like minded people and we all had one big aim in mind, to get as many wonderful books in accessible formats as possible so we could all enjoy them, and how we all understood the frustration of parts of a series never making it to braille? It makes a person quite nostalgic, although we all know that system too had its flaws. What it didn't do was dampen your enthusiasm.

I certainly do linda. The assistance i received from those librarians was always spot on. You were treated like you belonged to a family of like-minded readers, nothing was ever too much trouble, and as you say, it was a joy to come away from the call having received the exact help you were looking for, and as a bonus book recommendations you might not have otherwise known about. The read on magazine was also a joy to receive and read.

Hi Linda

Yes, the Stockport NLB was fantastic, I could ring them up one day and ask for a book, and I'd normally have it the next. They were friendly, efficient and incredibly helpful, and I for one was heartbroken when it closed down. I also knew it was going to be downhill from then when I heard RNIB were going to be in charge. It's very sad, and is depriving people of what used to be a first-class service.

I have recently had someone at RNIB offer to try to send me books by a particular author, in order. Perhaps she had specialist knowledge.

Anyway, it is ridiculous to have software that only lists books in alphabetical order. Do they not have any trained librarians?

Hi Judith and All,

What puzzled me, was that I've used the Braille Library service a lot in the past few years, always phoning through directly to the librarians on 01733 375333. I'm sure I remember them using an alternative database to look up information about books, where the data didn't appear on the RNIB Catalogue screen. I'm pretty sure I've spoken to the same lady as I spoke to yesterday, and that she was able to do this. I was really surprised when this didn't seem to be possible.
I wonder if they're now preventing their staff from using anything other than the online library.

Very odd.

Have you noticed how, in any correspondence from the reading services (not that there's much i know), the only telephone number that's ever given is the main RNIB helpline: 0303 1239999? I only learned of the direct number tim has mentioned through a friend, and it's the one i always call to discuss any reading-related matters except my magazine subscriptions. Just seems odd to me that the number to get through directly to the reading services team isn't easily available for all to see. Like they're trying their hardest to discourage people from using it.

Hi Tim,

Yes it is odd. I can't understand why they should prefer their staff to offer an inferior service. I wonder if we can get a sensible answer out of anyone in management about this?

Hello all

It is interesting to read others experiences of the library service here.  I spent a long time in a local library as a child, and their careful and gentle questioning about what I’d liked in some books rather than others was a wonderful way of exploring new material, recommended by a qualified librarian who seemed to actually care about what I was reading.

My experience with RNIB has never been caring. Whether it’s been to buy a replacement cane or choose a new DAISY book, everything’s been completely transactional on my part. I wouldn’t presume to have even asked for “the next book in the series” as Tim did because to me, the RNIB library is now nothing more than a repository of accessible material.  Obviously this impression has only strengthened with the fact that they don’t want books back in Braille, but of course the same thing happened when they burned DAISY CD’s on demand for customers. What we’re seeing with Braille is what we already saw  in 2002 when one-time use discs became the de facto standard for talking books.

I wonder, though, just how many people  want a curated service in this day and age?  One of the largest irritations of my access to Braille as a child was the matter of choice: people picked what I “could” have, then let me choose from their selections. Obviously, libraries themselves are limited in scope, yet things were far narrower for me as a youth.   Today There are online forums, facebook groups, WhatsApp book clubs, whole Subreddits and even dedicated social networks for readers (such as Goodreads).  I’m not saying libraries no longer have a place, but they are now synonymous  with indoor activities for children and free Internet access as much as they are for helping you find a good book. The role of the librarian in modern times has, I posit, reduced, at least in the view of those young folk either not minded to read, or only interested  in picking up the fashionable.

Meaning no disrespect to anyone here, but my initial thought on reading Tim’s request yesterday was “why didn’t you Google it first?”. I read the posts heavy with nostalgia for times when you could have a good chat on the phone about your books with the person you want to pick your next, and see exactly those types of discussion going on through all the technological platforms I mentioned above. And yes, of course, in sitting rooms, church halls, even park benches, people will congregate to talk about their reading.  But to me,  I’d sooner use the RNIB as a service to get the content I want, rather than asking them to train their staff to tell me something I might like.

I am very much skewed in favour of not using them, I should add. I don’t use the RNIB library often anymore, I devote a little of my earnings to personal reading because I’m not patient enough to wait for new books to be processed and buy them as soon as they’re on sale. So I can’t comment on how up or down hill the service may  have gone o’er the years. But I do work with young people, and although some very much value a school librarian, I can’t think of anyone my age or younger who would expect a retailer or supplier to fill in the level of detail that seems to be missed as lamented lacking in the last 2 days of messages on this group.

I hope I’ve put no noses out of joint.

Sean.

I was being slightly deliberately facetious and whimsical when I wrote my post. Having said that, Stockport really were excellent if you needed recommendations for your children, when it wasn't always so straightforward working out what might be appropriate to your child's reading level or interest. And RNIB are still very good if you want something specific, especially if you are lucky enough to find somebody who shares your interest. I had a very positive experience recently when looking for craft books. But I do think a lot of this discussion has to do with how comfortable we all are with using technology to access material. Some of us are not as confident with it as others and so we do, at least for now, still need to have the choice. I have said before I think that choice will eventually disappear and the aim is to get more of us onto braille displays, and this current change with providing braille is a step in that direction. Most children and young people, in my experience, either hardly ever read, or prefer audio, and if they do learn braille, they don't learn it to the level of proficiency we did years ago. They prefer to use braille displays so in that regard it's probably just as well they read differently from us old folk, because you can never get the same sort of relaxed flow of reading and get lost in a book on a braille display, that you can achieve with a good solid book on your knee. To me a braille display feels like work, not leisure, and having to be constantly hitting the panning keys to see a few more words is really frustrating. You can't speed read, you can't predict what's coming because your flow is constantly interrupted. I would prefer to use braille displays for functional reading and hard copy if I just want to get lost in a book. Audio is great, but it's passive, and I don't always have the desire for, nor the ability to cope with, more voices demanding my attention. As my competence and confidence with technology has grown, I have been more inclined to use online forums to find ideas on what to read, and following particular authors. It's great to find something fresh and new and to realise with a few clicks it can be right there in your inbox and ready to read. We have a far greater choice than we ever did before. But it's still good to be able to curl up with a proper book and have the same choice that others can, to buy a paperback or read on a kindle for example. But then, for anyone who has a braille embosser, I suppose there's nothing to stop you printing off a rough copy for yourself, is there, if you can afford the paper and if the file isn't restricted so you can't!

Subject: Braillists Forum: Book Series Requests from RNIB Reading Services Hi All,

I was speaking to the RNIB Reading Services team this afternoon. I wanted to order the next book in the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett which I've been re-reading. I spoke to a really nice sensible and helpful lady, and told her I'd got to about number 4 in the Discworld series, and asked her what the next title would be in the series. She said that her screen would only list titles alphabetically, so unless I already knew what the next book in the series was, she couldn't help.

I can't believe what a step backwards this is from the days when you could phone up and easily get this information and wonder who can possibly be specifying and accepting such an extraordinarily badly designed system.

Regards,

Tim

Hi all.  I have read Sean’s post several times and think he is correct in seeing RNIB as a repository or creator of accessible material, rather than a library.  I am sure that some of the existing Library staff will be qualified librarians but wonder whether, if they were to be replaced, similar qualifications would be sought in new appointees.

Our Blind Low Vision NZ organization is doing the same. All calls are through the Contact Centre. I wonder if we will even have our own phones for much longer.

Cheers

Paula.
