Hi All,

I have a Stainsby device which is no longer required, and is available free to a good home (assuming it doesn’t break the Articles for the Blind maximum weight limit).

This used to belong to my mother who transferred her allegiance to the Perkins sometime in the 1980s and who died recently.

What’s in the box:  Not having ever used a Stainsby, I don’t know how these were usually supplied, but what we’ve got here is a small suitcase (a bit smaller than the case which comes with a Perkins).  In the case is a board and clamp, and two of the Stainsby carriage things.  I don’t know why there would be 2 of these unless they’re different in some way, or maybe one was kept in reserve.

There’s also a braille pamphlet of operating instructions last revised in 1974.  The case appears to be way too big for the contents, so I wonder if something else was usually supplied, with the Stainsby, or if this actually isn’t the case which was supplied with it.

If anyone would like this collection of kit, could they drop me an email, (first come first served, but I’m not expecting a rush), and we can take it from there.

Regards,

Tim Pennick

The best place for that has to be in a museum?  Is there a museum devoted visual impairment equipment?

Way back around the late 1970s I decided to learn Braille because I’d got back in touch with a girlfriend who I’d first met aged five at a boarding school for the partially sighted.  She left to go to a day school for the PS aged 10, and I had no idea what had happened to her.  When a mutual friend put us back in touch, she had been registered blind, but we both worked in London. Young and single then, my friend could read almost no print, and our calls would be long distance in those days. I decided to teach myself Braille.

One of my local male friends was already a fluent Braillist and had bought himself a Perkins.  He offered me his Stainsby.  I couldn’t even lift the keys to the next line, manipulating them to form the cells was even worse than pounding the 1960s manual typewriter!!

I’ve not seen or heard of anyone use one since then, but one never knows.

Good luck!  Chris

Hi Tim,

Alan and I specialise in refurbished Stainsbies and Perkins.

Please can you send it to Allen?

He will drop you his address.

I can send it to Zambia or somebody in UK.

I found the letter about your mum aged 6, absolutely fascinating.

Thank you so much for sharing it. A bygone era indeed.

All the best,

Steph

Hi Steph,

Sorry but surprisingly, you were pipped to the post.  I would have liked to make it available for your scheme, but I did specifically say that it was first come first served, so I feel I’ll have to stick to my word.

Tim
